Learning Goal
Act out waiting situations & identify 2 personal calming coping strategies.

Patience: Waiting calmly.
Impulse: Sudden body urges.
Toolbox: Calming tricks.
Materials
Freeze Frame Slides, Pantomime Cards, Patience Plan worksheets, crayons.
1 Hook & Definition: The Waiting Superpower (0–5 min)
Slides 1–2
Instructional Goal: Activate prior knowledge of waiting and establish body awareness through contrasting physical statues.
Teacher Phrasing: "Actors, take your spots on the carpet! Raise one finger if you have ever had to wait for something super exciting—like a birthday present, your turn on the swing, or yummy pizza right out of the oven!"
Physical Demo (Statue Contrast): "When we feel impatient, our bodies turn into popping popcorn—we wiggle, complain, stomp our feet! Try popping popcorn right in your spot! (Wait 5 sec). Now... FREEZE! Take a deep breath. Patience is our superpower: it means waiting with a calm body and a peaceful heart ."
💡 Choral Chant: Teach call-and-response: Teacher: "What is patience?" Students: "Calm body, peaceful heart!"
2 Drama Activity: The Freeze Frame Game (5–15 min)
Slides 3–5 & Cards
Rules: Teacher announces a scenario. Students silently act out the impatient struggle for 10 seconds. On the clap/call "FREEZE FRAME!" , students freeze like statues and spot where impatience is hiding in their bodies.
🎬 Round 1 (Whole Class): The Thirsty Fountain Line
Cue: "You just ran in from recess. You are SO thirsty! But there are five friends ahead of you at the water fountain. Show me what your face and hands do when you can barely wait!"
Freeze & Reflect: "FREEZE! Look at your hands. Are they clenched? Look at your feet—are they tapping? What is our impulse wanting us to do? (Call on 1 student: 'Push ahead!') That's impulse. Now, let's melt into calm patience statues."
🎬 Round 2 (Partner Pantomime): The Big Playground Swing
Cue: "Turn to your elbow partner. Partner A is swinging high in the air. Partner B is standing nearby, desperate for a turn. Silent action... GO!"
Side Coaching: "Notice how hard waiting feels when our turn isn't right now. Freeze! Tap your heart if your chest felt fast or tense. That's our cue that we need a strategy!"

3 Strategy Brainstorm: The Calming Toolbox (15–20 min)
Slide 6
Introduce 4 concrete bodily coping strategies. Model each with an accompanying tactile physical action for 1st graders to mimic immediately.
🎈 1. Balloon Belly Breath
Hands on belly. Breathe in through nose to puff out tummy like a big birthday balloon, blow out gently through straw lips.
🐢 2. The Turtle Tuck
Cross arms over chest in a gentle hug. Tuck chin down into "turtle shell" for three slow seconds until body stops buzzing.
⭐ 3. Star Counting (1 to 10)
Touch each finger to thumb while whispering numbers 1 to 10 slowly. Focus mind away from the impatient urge.
💬 4. Cheerful Self-Talk
Whisper to self: "My turn is coming soon!" or "I am strong enough to wait!" Replaces grumpy thoughts with peace.
4 Record Plan: Personal Patience Plan (20–26 min)
Patience Plan Worksheet
Distribute the Patience Plan Worksheet . Students select and record two coping strategies they will personally use when waiting gets hard.
Teacher Phrasing: "Every superhero has their two favorite gadgets. Look at our strategy bank: which two tricks will help YOUR body calm down when you feel impatient? In Box 1, draw yourself doing Strategy #1! In Box 2, draw Strategy #2. Trace or write the name!"
✏️ 1st Grade Scaffolding: Students may draw pictures, copy strategy words from the bank, or dictate phrases.
5 Share & Theatrical Bow (26–30 min)
Slide 8
Partner Spotlight: "Turn to your partner and whisper: 'When I have to wait, I will use [Strategy 1]!' Partner demonstrates the pose back to you!"
🎭 Final Bow & Pledge: "Hands on hearts. Repeat after me: I have a calm body! I have a peaceful heart! I am a Patience Superhero!" Take a giant theater bow together.
First-Grade Differentiation & Behavioral Tips
For Active / Wiggly Learners: Provide a tactile sensory squishy or let them do the "Turtle Tuck" with physical arm pressure. Validate that feeling impatient is normal.
For Emerging Writers / ELL: Focus on picture drawing in the Patience Plan. Visual picture cues are on the cards and slides to support comprehension.
