Noble Leader Teacher Guide The Noble Leader
Teacher Facilitation Guide
Objective
Students will reflect on the concept of "Modern Chivalry" and analyze how respectful behavior influences effective leadership and group dynamics.
Duration
45 Minutes
Recommended for Middle School Advisory or SEL blocks.
1. Warm-up: The Power of Politeness (5 min)
Ask the class: "Is being polite a sign of weakness or strength? Why?"
Encourage students to share examples of when they've seen kindness used effectively.
Note: Many students might initially associate "toughness" with strength.
2. Viewing: The Code of Chivalry (10 min)
Watch the specific sections of the video: "Knighthood and Chivalry: Medieval Values and Heroes."
KEY SEGMENTS:
04:36-05:09: The Gentle Side. Highlights that knights were expected to be kind and respectful, not just warriors.
06:58-08:12: Richard the Lionheart. Discusses how respect for enemies makes a leader more effective.
3. Activity: Leadership Scenarios (25 min)
Pair students and distribute Scenario Cards . Pairs must role-play two different endings for their modern conflict.
Ending A: Reaction based on anger, defensiveness, or "winning."
Ending B: Reaction based on "Modern Chivalry" (respect, dignity, and calm).
Facilitation Notes
Defining Modern Chivalry
Modern Chivalry isn't about horses or swords. It's a Code of Character . In today's world, it looks like:
Integrity: Doing what's right even when it's hard.
Respect: Treating others (even rivals) with dignity.
Self-Control: Staying calm when someone is trying to provoke you.
Service: Using your strengths to help others, not bully them.
Class Discussion Prompts
"In Ending A, who actually 'won'? What happened to the relationship or the group?"
"In Ending B, why might it feel 'harder' to be the bigger person? Does it require more or less strength than getting angry?"
"How does reacting with respect change the way others view you as a leader?"
Closure (5 min)
Distribute the Knight Honor Exit Tickets . Have students identify one specific situation this week where they can use "Modern Chivalry."
Example: "When my brother takes my headphones, I'll ask for them back calmly instead of yelling."
