Facilitating Self-Monitoring & Work Completion
Mission Objective
Students will develop metacognitive awareness (self-monitoring) by using a structured flight-plan framework to initiate, track, and complete academic tasks independently.

Phase 1: The Briefing (15 min)

Hook: Use the Mission Control Slides to frame the brain as a cockpit. Ask: "Who is flying your plane during independent work? Is it you, or are you on autopilot?"

Modeling: Demonstrate filling out the Flight Plan. Choose a deliberately complex task. Show how to break a big step into smaller maneuvers.
Phase 2: Launch & Flight (Active Work)
Set a timer for 10-minute intervals. Every time it beeps, students should glance at their Radar Checkcard and adjust their behavior based on their current "Flight Status."
The "Radar Check" Strategy
Point to a student's Radar Checkcard and ask: "Commander, status check. Where is your radar right now?" This prompts internal reflection rather than external compliance.
Phase 3: Landing & Debrief (10 min)
Landing is the most critical phase. Success isn't just finishing—it's reflecting on the flight.
Debrief Discussion Prompts:
"When did you feel like you were most in control of your mission today?"
"Did anyone have to 'radio for help'? How did that help you get back on course?"
Troubleshooting Common Failures
Failure to Launch
Student is overwhelmed by the blank page.
Fix: Help them identify the very first "micro-move" (e.g., "Just write your name"). Momentum often follows initiation.
Mid-Air Drift
Student starts strong but loses focus after 5-10 minutes.
Fix: Shorten the radar check intervals. Use a visual timer to prompt a status check every 3 minutes.
Advanced Missions (Extensions)
Co-Pilot Mode
Pair students to check each other's "Flight Plans" before launch to ensure the navigation steps are specific and achievable.
Fuel Efficiency
Challenge students to estimate time (fuel) for each step and check their actual usage against their estimates.
