Mindfulness Chains Lesson PlanMindfulness with Paper Chains Building a chain of positivity, one link at a time. Grades 2-4 Tier 1 Support Time 20 Minutes Approach Mindfulness & Gratitude Objective Practice positive reflection Why This Lesson? Students engage in a tactile craft to practice mindfulness by creating paper chains. Each link represents a positive thought or moment of gratitude, helping students focus on the present and fostering a sense of calm. This activity encourages students to reflect on positive experiences, promoting emotional well-being and a positive classroom culture. What You'll Need Colored paper strips (or printed templates) Markers, crayons, or colored pencils Glue sticks or clear tape Scissors Instructional Steps 1 Introduction to Mindfulness 3 Minutes Define Mindfulness: Briefly explain it as being "present and aware of the moment" (like noticing the air in your lungs or the sound of the clock). Positive Focus: Discuss how focusing on positive thoughts can help us feel calm and happy, even when things are busy. Set the Stage: Introduce the paper chain activity as a way to "capture" these happy thoughts so we can see them all together. 2 Creating Paper Chains 12 Minutes Distribute Materials: Give each student 3-5 paper strips and markers. Prompting: Instruct students to write or draw one positive thought or something they are grateful for on each strip. Ex: A pet, a favorite food, a nice friend, a fun recess game. Build the Chain: Demonstrate how to loop the first strip and glue/tape it, then thread the next strip through and connect it. Keep it Growing: Encourage students to think of different positive thoughts for every single link. 3 Reflection and Sharing 5 Minutes The Gallery: Invite students to hold up their chains or join them together as a class. Share: Ask for volunteers to share one link from their chain. Discussion: Ask: "How did it feel to think only about happy things while we were working?" Closing: Remind students that they can always "find a link" of gratitude whenever they feel stressed.

Think about being "present" and how it helps us manage our big feelings. 2 How did it feel to focus on positive thoughts while making the paper chain? Did your mood change? Did you feel calm, excited, or peaceful? 3 Can you think of other ways to practice mindfulness in your daily life? Think about breathing, listening, or other things you do every day.
