A Little Piece of Home
By Lenny's Cozy Tales • A story about starting new journeys
It was the first day of school, and Maya was nervous. Her new classroom was bright and colorful. There were books on the shelves, crayons on the tables, and names on every desk. Everyone seemed excited. But Maya’s tummy felt funny.
Before she left home that morning, Maya’s dad had asked, “Would you like to bring something small that helps you feel comfortable?” Maya knew exactly what she wanted. She grabbed her favorite little stuffed bear, Brownie.
Brownie had soft brown fur and one floppy ear. Maya slept with him every night. Whenever she felt scared, sad, or nervous, holding Brownie helped her feel better. When Maya walked into her classroom, she kept Brownie tucked safely inside her backpack.
Her teacher smiled. “Good morning, Maya! I’m so happy you’re here.” Maya smiled a tiny smile. During morning meeting, the teacher said, “Sometimes coming to a new place can feel exciting. Sometimes it can also make us a little nervous. Is there something that helps you feel comfortable when you are nervous?”
One student said, “My blanket!” Another said, “My mommy gives me hugs.” Someone else said, “I like my dinosaur!” Maya slowly raised her hand. “I brought my bear,” she said. She reached into her backpack and showed everyone Brownie. “He reminds me of home.”
Her teacher smiled. “Sometimes a little piece of home can help us feel brave in a new place.” Maya looked around the classroom again. It still looked new. But it didn’t feel quite as scary anymore.
Later that morning, Maya colored a picture with a new friend. She listened to a funny story. She even raised her hand to answer a question. Before she knew it, Maya realized something. Brownie was still in her backpack. She hadn’t needed to hold him all morning.
Maya smiled. Brownie helped her feel comfortable enough to discover that school could be a comfortable place, too. At the end of the day, Maya hugged her teacher goodbye. “I think I’m ready to come back tomorrow,” she said.
