Guided Breathing Guide Teacher Resource
Guided Breathing Guide
A step-by-step guide to lead students through a simple breathing exercise.
Facilitation Tips
Speak in a slow, calm, and slightly quieter voice than usual.
Model the breathing yourself so students can see and hear the deep breaths.
Use the "Balloon Breathing" metaphor to help young children visualize the air.
Step 1: Setup
"Find a comfortable way to sit. You can be on the floor with your legs crossed or in your chair with your feet flat. Let your hands rest softly in your lap."
Step 2: Eyes
"Gently close your eyes if that feels okay. If not, just look down at your knees or the floor in front of you."
Step 3: The Breath (Repeat 3-5 times)
"Take a deep breath in through your nose. Imagine your belly is filling up like a big, colorful balloon."
(Pause for 1 second)
"Now, hold that breath for a tiny moment... one... two... three."
(Pause)
"Slowly breathe out through your mouth. Feel the air leave and your belly balloon get smaller and smaller."
Step 4: Focus
"As you breathe, just notice how the air feels. Is it cool? Is it warm? Just listen to the sound of your breath."
Encourage students to practice this whenever they feel "big feelings" like anger or excitement.
Guided Imagery Script Teacher script
Guided Imagery Script
A calming narrative to guide students through imagining a peaceful scene.
How to Read
Read the script below slowly. Pause for 3-5 seconds whenever you see [Pause] to let students explore the image in their minds.
"Close your eyes and take a deep breath in... and let it out slow. Imagine you are in a place that makes you feel happy and peaceful."
[Pause]
"Maybe you are at a beach with soft, warm sand under your toes. Or maybe you are in a forest with tall, green trees and a soft carpet of moss. Picture yourself there, feeling the warmth of the sun on your skin, or a gentle breeze in your hair."
[Pause]
"Notice the colors all around you. Bright blues, soft greens, or golden yellow. What do you hear? Can you hear the sound of the waves splashing? Or birds chirping in the trees? Take a few moments to explore this place in your mind, feeling completely relaxed and safe."
[Pause - 10 seconds]
"When you are ready, take another deep breath in... and as you breathe out, slowly open your eyes. Wiggle your fingers and your toes. Remember, you can visit this peaceful place in your imagination anytime you need to feel calm."
Discussion Prompts
"Would anyone like to share what their happy place looked like?"
"How did your body feel while you were imagining that place?"
