Core SEL Objectives
- • Debunk the "Cool/Funny" Myth: Explicitly teach that bad words, bathroom talk, and rude finger gestures are never jokes and do not make someone "cool" or "grown-up."
- • Break the Laughter Trap: Teach classmates that laughing at inappropriate behavior rewards it and hurts others.
- • Equip Peer Bystanders: Train students to respond with a calm face, body turn, and firm words: "That's not cool."
The Kindergarten Trap
Kindergarteners repeat inappropriate words or rude gestures primarily for reaction and perceived status. When peers giggle or gasp, the child feels powerful. We must eliminate that social reward.

The "Wrinkled Heart" & The Humor Check (10 min)
Materials: Construction-paper heart
Teacher Action: Hold up the clean paper heart.
"Friends, sometimes children say potty words, bad words, or show a rude hand gesture because they think, 'Look at me, I'm being hilarious!' or 'I look so cool like an older kid.'" → Crumple the heart sharply once. "Look at our heart. Did that make the heart smile? No. A real joke makes everyone laugh happily together. When someone uses an ouch word or rude gesture, someone else's feelings get bruised." → Address the peers directly: "And if friends around them laugh or giggle, it makes the person think it was funny. Laughing at ouch words is not helpful. It is not funny, and it is definitely not cool!"
