Story Reading
One sunny morning at Pine Grove Elementary, Zoe and her friend Carlos were walking to class when they noticed something shiny on the sidewalk. Zoe picked it up and gasped. It was a leather wallet!
“Well, it’s empty,” Carlos said, flipping it open. “There’s no money.” But inside, Zoe saw a school ID card with a picture of their classmate, Maya, and her phone number.
Zoe’s heart pounded. “Someone lost this. Should we keep it?” Carlos shrugged. “We could just throw it away,” he suggested. Zoe shook her head. “Maya will be so upset if she can’t find it. I want to help her.”
They hurried to Mrs. Lopez, their teacher, and showed her the wallet. Mrs. Lopez smiled. “Great job finding this, friends. Let’s call Maya’s number so she can come get it.” Zoe felt proud when Maya arrived, tears of relief in her eyes. Maya thanked them again and again, and even gave Zoe a big hug.
After school, Zoe raced home to help her mom in the living room. While carrying a vase of flowers, she tripped on the rug. Crash! The vase tumbled to the floor and shattered into pieces. Zoe’s stomach knotted. She gathered up the biggest pieces and hid them behind the sofa.
When her mom walked in, she gasped. “My favorite vase! What happened?” Zoe’s cheeks burned. She could lie and say she didn’t know. Instead, she took a deep breath and said, “Mom, I’m sorry. I broke it by accident.”
Her mom’s face softened. “Thank you for telling me the truth, Zoe. I’m sad about the vase, but I’m proud of you for being honest.” Zoe felt relief wash over her. She realized that being honest sometimes felt scary at first, but it always helped fix a problem and kept trust strong.
That night, Zoe snuggled into bed feeling like a real Honesty Hero. She knew that telling the truth was always the best choice—even when it wasn’t easy.
Pause & Think
• Why did Zoe choose to return the wallet?
• How did telling the truth about the vase help Zoe and her mom?
• What does it feel like to be an Honesty Hero?
