Lesson Overview
This lesson uses the metaphor of "superpowers" to help students identify and articulate their positive character traits. By reframing character strengths as heroic abilities, students build self-esteem and recognize the value they bring to their community.
Grade Level
K - 3
Duration
45 - 60 Minutes
Objectives
- Define 7 positive character traits.
- Provide personal examples of demonstrating strengths.
- Reflect on self-identity through drawing and writing.
Instructional Sequence
01
The Hook (10 mins)
Use the Heroic Traits Slides. Ask students: "What makes someone a hero?" Move from physical powers (flight, strength) to internal powers (kindness, bravery). Highlight that today they are training to find their own internal powers.
02
Power Definitions (15 mins)
Go through the 7 traits on the slides. For each trait, ask for a volunteer to share a time they saw someone in the classroom use that power. This builds community recognition alongside self-recognition.
03
Profile Creation (25 mins)
Distribute the Superpower Profile Worksheet. Students should choose traits that best describe them and complete the sentences. Encourage them to be specific about their actions.
Facilitation Prompts
During Slides
"If you had to pick one power to give to everyone in the world, which would it be and why?"
During Worksheet
"Think about a time you did something you were proud of. Which power were you using in that moment?"
Example Responses
"I show I am Helpful when I hold the door for my teacher when her hands are full."
"I show I am Brave when I ask a question in class even when I'm shy."
"I show I am Persistent when I keep trying to tie my shoes even when it's tricky."
