Pacing
20-25 Minutes
(Adjustable for Grades K-5)
Materials
- Mirror Magic Slides
- Hand mirrors (optional)
- Class "Identity Web" poster
1 The Radiant Greeting (5 min)
Goal: To see and be seen by peers with positivity.
Instructions:
Students stand in a circle. Each student greets the person to their right by saying: "Good morning [Neighbor's Name]! I'm so glad your unique light is here today." The receiver responds with a smile or a high-five.
2 The Inner Mirror (7 min)
Goal: Identifying positive traits beyond physical appearance.
The Prompt:
"If you looked into a magic mirror that showed your inside strengths, what is one thing it would show today?"
Teacher Tip: Model this first. "I think my mirror would show my patience when I'm helping others."
3 Identity Puzzle (10 min)
Goal: Visualizing how individual identities create a community.
Distribute small "puzzle piece" cards or sticky notes. Ask students to write/draw three "Identity Anchors" (e.g., Artist, Big Brother, Hmong, Soccer Player, Kind).
Explain: "Healthy self-perception means being proud of who you are without thinking you are 'better' than anyone else."
Have students place their pieces on a central "Our Class Mosaic" board.
4 Morning Message (3 min)
"Dear Class, Today we celebrate the magic that is YOU. When we look in the mirror, we see more than just a face; we see a world of stories, talents, and dreams. Let's practice being our own best friend today."
Your Teacher
Facilitator Questions
"How does it feel to say something good about yourself out loud?"
"What can we do if we hear an 'inner critic' saying mean things to us?"
"How does being proud of ourselves help our whole class get stronger?"
"Why is it important to recognize that everyone's 'mirror' is different?"

ADL Anti-Bias Framework
Goal 1: Identity
Healthy Self-Perception
"Students will demonstrate self-awareness, confidence, family pride, and positive social identities."
— ADL Anti-Bias Education Goal
Beyond Self-Esteem
Unlike generic self-esteem, healthy self-perception is grounded in social identity. It helps students understand their place in their family, culture, and community as a source of power and resilience.
Confidence vs. Superiority
The framework emphasizes that being proud of who you are does not require others to be "lesser." This distinction is vital for preventing bullying and fostering true inclusion.
Key Learning Anchors
-
1
Internal Focus
Valuing character and effort over physical appearance.
-
2
Multiple Identities
Acknowledging that we are many things at once (e.g. Hmong, artist, friend).
-
3
Critical Self-Talk
Replacing harmful "inner critic" thoughts with self-compassion.
Classroom Implementation
Mirror Talk
Model affirmations that celebrate resilience and growth.
Identity Mapping
Map out students' diverse traits to show shared connections.
Safe Space
Build a culture where self-confidence is met with joy, not envy.
