Gratitude Journaling Lesson Plan
Gratitude Journaling
Teacher Facilitation Guide
Time
15 mins daily
Audience
6th - 8th Grade
Objective
Enhance self-awareness and positivity
Why It Matters
Gratitude isn't just about saying "thank you." It's a cognitive habit that trains the brain to notice the positive aspects of life. In middle school, where social and academic pressures can feel overwhelming, this practice helps students build resilience, improve mental well-being, and foster a more optimistic outlook by reflecting on family, friends, and the world around them.
Materials
- Gratitude Journaling Worksheet
- Pens or pencils
- Notebook or journal (optional)
- Gratitude Slides
Daily Routine Sequence
1
Introduction to Gratitude
3 mins
Briefly explain the concept of gratitude and its importance in daily life. Modeling is key here.
Teacher Script Idea:
"Today, we’re going to practice a small habit that can make a big difference in how we feel. I’ll start: Today, I’m grateful for the sunlight coming through the windows and for the hot coffee I had this morning. It made me feel energized."
2
Journaling Activity
8 mins
- Distribute the Gratitude Journaling Worksheet to each student.
- Instruct students to write down three things they are grateful for today.
- Encourage them to think specifically: instead of just "family," think of "the joke my brother told at dinner."
Pro-tip: Play soft, instrumental music in the background to set a calm atmosphere during the writing time.
3
Reflection and Sharing
4 mins
- Invite a few students to share one thing they wrote (volunteers only).
- Ask: "Does anyone notice a shift in their mood after focusing on these positive things?"
- Remind students that building a "gratitude muscle" takes practice, just like a sport or an instrument.
Tips for Success
Differentiating
Allow students to draw their gratitude items instead of writing, or provide sentence starters like "I am thankful for... because..."
Consistency
Try to do this at the same time every day—beginning of class or right after lunch—to make it a predictable ritual.
