Winning and Losing with Style
That "Losing" Feeling
It's okay to feel disappointed when you don't win. You might feel:
Hot in your face
Tight in your chest
Like you want to walk away
Frustrated or "stuck"
True or False?
It is possible to be a great player even when you lose.
(Answer: True!)
The Power Breath
When frustration rises, your brain needs oxygen to stay calm.
Try the 4-4-4:
• In for 4 seconds
• Hold for 4 seconds
• Out for 4 seconds
Inhale
Coach Your Brain
The Grumble Voice
"This isn't fair! I'm the worst at this. I'm never playing again."
The Coach Voice
"That was a close game. I'll do better next time. It's just a game!"
Which voice helps you stay in the game?
The Tactical Timeout
If you feel like you might explode or say something unkind, it's time for a break. A break isn't quitting—it's resetting .

RESET YOUR BRAIN
The Golden Rule: Sportsmanship
1
Say "Good Game"
(Even if you don't feel like it)
2
No Gloating
Don't rub a win in someone's face
3
Follow Rules
Winning by cheating isn't winning
You're a Winner!
When you stay calm and kind after a loss, you've actually won a much bigger game: Self-Control.

Lesson Sequence
1
The "Hook" (5 mins)
Ask students to share a time they felt frustrated while playing a game. Validate those feelings immediately: "It makes sense to feel that way because you care about the game!"
2
Direct Instruction (15 mins)
Use the Game Day Slides to introduce the four strategies. Model each one physically (e.g., show what a "coach voice" sounds like vs. a "grumble voice").
3
Skill Practice (15 mins)
Use the Sportsmanship Role Play Cards in pairs. Have students swap roles so everyone practices being both the "winner" and the "loser." Follow up with the Strategy Shuffle Handout for individual reflection.
4
The Final Quest (20 mins)
Divide students into small groups to play the Cool Down Quest Board Game . This is the "real-time" practice where they apply the skills learned in steps 2 and 3.
Pro-Tips for Facilitators
Validation First
Don't rush to "fix" the feeling. Acknowledge it first: "I see you're really disappointed. It's hard to lose when you try so hard." This lowers defenses before you suggest a strategy.
The "Pre-Game" Check
Before starting any game in the future, ask: "What strategy will you use if you lose today?" Set the expectation before the adrenaline kicks in.
Highlight the "Middle"
Often we praise the winner and console the loser. Try praising the student who *stayed calm* during a loss: "I noticed you took a deep breath when your tower fell. That was great self-control!"
Modeling Failure
Purposely lose a game to a student and narrate your thoughts: "Aww man, I lost! I'm feeling a bit sad, so I'm going to take a big breath and say 'Good Game' to you anyway."
