30-Minute Instructional Arc
0–5 Min
Phase 1: Hook — Detective Mission Induction
Introduce the "Feelings Detective" role with magnifying glasses. Teach the Detective Chant: "Look close, see the clue, how can I be kind to you?" Connect looking at faces and bodies to caring actions.
5–12 Min
Phase 2: Body Language Clue Training (Slides)
Display Detective Clue Slides. Teach 4 body zones: Eyes (wide, tearing, crinkled), Mouth (smile, frown, tight line), Hands (fists, open, holding tight), and Shoulders (hunched, bouncing, stiff).
12–18 Min
Phase 3: Partner Detective Practice
Children sit knee-to-knee with magnifying glass props. Partner A acts out a feeling prompt silently using body clues; Partner B names the clue and infers the feeling (Happy, Sad, Mad, Scared). Switch roles!
18–25 Min
Phase 4: Case Cracking & Caring Response Cards
Read aloud interactive story scenarios. When a character feels upset, students pick a Caring Response Card (Offer Hug, Ask to Play, Give Space, Ask Teacher). Discuss how caring changes feelings!
25–30 Min
Phase 5: Badge Ceremony & Detective Oath
Recite the Detective Empathy Oath together. Award each student their official "Feelings Detective" badge sticker/pin. Celebrate caring helpers in the classroom community!

Pre-K Adaptations
Teacher Guided Talk & Prompts
Phase 1 Prompt (Detective Lens Induction):
"Detectives, grab your imaginary trench coats and hold up your magnifying glasses! Real detectives look for secret footprints. But Feelings Detectives look for secret clues on friends' bodies! When a friend is having a big feeling, their body talks before their words do. Let's find out what clues to look for!"
Phase 3 Coaching (Partner Clue Check):
"Peer through your magnifying glass! What clue do you spot? Are their shoulders pulled up high like turtle shells? Are their hands making tight balls? What feeling is that body showing? Remember: we guess with kind eyes, never teasing!"
Phase 4 Guidance (Empathetic Choices):
"Now comes the detective superpower: The Caring Choice! Just knowing our friend is sad isn't enough. What can we DO to help? Look at your Caring Cards: Do they need a quiet friend to sit near them? An invite to build blocks? Or a teacher's help?"
Emerging English & Non-Verbal
Pair spoken feeling words with picture cards and facial gestures.
Allow children to point to the Caring Response Card.
Accept thumbs up/down or mirroring gestures for checks.
Sensory & Movement Modifications
Have active students 'freeze' into feeling statues.
Provide physical foam stress balls for 'clenching fists' practice.
Permit standing or floor seating during story scenarios.
Common Pre-K Misconception Detective Redirection
"They are quiet, so they are sleepy or boring." "Look closer! Slumped shoulders and downcast eyes often mean feeling sad or left out."
"Everyone always wants a hug when mad." "Mad bodies often need safe space and deep breaths first. Always ask!"
"I can fix it by grabbing their toy back." "Gentle detectives never grab! We use kind words or invite a teacher to help."
Center Time Detective Extensions
Dramatic Play: "Feelings Clinic" with clipboards, magnifying glasses, and plush toy patients.
Art Center: Children draw faces with different mouths and eyes on paper plate detective puppets.

DETECTIVE STUDENTS: "His hands are in tight balls!" / "He stomped his feet!" / "His eyebrows are mean/grumpy!"
