Daily Decisions Detective
Duration: 30 Minutes
Domain: Social-Emotional Learning
Setting: Whole Class & Pairs
Learning Objective

Guiding Mystery
"If every daily decision leaves a clue, what positive and negative ripples follow our choices?"
Key Concepts & Definitions
Consequence: The natural result or ripple of an action (can be helpful OR unhelpful).
Decision-Making: Choosing between two or more pathways.
Responsibility: Owning our choices and their outcomes.
Materials Checklist
✔ Mystery of Choices Slides (Presentation)
✔ Choice Evidence Log (1 per student)
✔ Detective Case Script (Teacher read-aloud)
✔ Pencils, highlighters, or colored markers
Instructional Arc (30-Minute Blueprint)
1 Detective Agency Warm-Up (Hook & Schema) 0:00 – 0:05 (5 mins)
Hook: Greet students as "Junior Detectives." Present the Mystery Clue: A backpack left open in the rain. Ask: "What caused this? What happens next?"
Key Reframe: Clarify that "consequence" does not mean punishment. A consequence is simply what happens after a choice—like dominoes knocking over the next piece.
2 Model Consequence Mapping (I Do / We Do) 0:05 – 0:13 (8 mins)
Model Case #1: "Choosing to pack your school bag the night before."
➕ Positive Consequence: Morning is calm; no rushing or forgotten homework folders.
➖ Negative Consequence: Takes 5 minutes of evening playtime or screen time right before bed.
Teacher Think-Aloud: Emphasize that almost every real-life decision carries both an upside and a trade-off. Detectives look for both!

Part 2 / Lesson Execution
3 Group Case Files Analysis (You Do in Detective Pairs) 0:13 – 0:23 (10 mins)
Distribute the Choice Evidence Log . Students pair up to solve three realistic case scenarios:
Case File A Staying up 1 hour past bedtime reading or playing.
Case File B Inviting the quiet new student to play four-square.
Case File C Telling the truth immediately when a water bottle spills.
Teacher Role: Circulate with the Detective Case Script. Prompt students: "What makes the choice feel tempting? What is the unseen negative ripple later?"
4 Whole-Class Debrief & Badge Awarding 0:23 – 0:30 (7 mins)
Gather the detective squad for debrief. Select 2-3 pairs to present their favorite case findings.
Reflection Question: "Why do people sometimes pick choices with big negative consequences?" (Immediate fun vs. delayed cost).
Responsibility Pledge: Students sign their Detective Oath box on the bottom of the Evidence Log.
Common Misconceptions
Myth: "Consequences only mean getting in trouble."
Fix: Praise and high grades are consequences too!
Myth: "A good choice has zero negative sides."
Fix: Good choices can require effort, patience, or missing out on short-term fun.
Differentiation Strategies
Support / ELL: Provide visual clue cards; allow students to draw outcome pictures or use sentence stems: "If I choose this, then..."
Extension: Challenge students to add a "ripple effect 2 hours later vs. 2 days later" on their Case Log.
Success Criteria & Assessment Checklist
