Teacher Lesson Plan
Subject
Interdisciplinary / SEL
Duration
60-90 Minutes
Grade Level
Upper Elementary - Middle
Mission Objectives
1
Identify the difference between Closed Questions (one-word answers) and Open Questions (exploratory answers).
2
Utilize the Curiosity Compass framework (North: New Facts, South: Secrets/Unknowns, East: Experiences, West: Wonders/Whys).
3
Construct a "Wonder Map" connecting a core curiosity to at least three different subjects (e.g., Science, History, Art).

Quest Slides (Slide Deck)
Question Quest (Worksheet)
Wonder Log (Journal)
Curiosity Map (Large Chart Paper)
The Journey Path
Step 1: The Spark (10 mins)
Start with a "Mystery Object" or a strange fact. Ask: "What do you notice? What does it make you wonder?" Avoid giving answers immediately. Use the Quest Slides to introduce the concept of the 'Curiosity Compass'.
Step 2: Calibrating the Compass (15 mins)
Distribute the Question Quest Worksheet . Guide students through sorting questions into those with simple "dead-end" answers vs. "open trails" that lead to more learning. Define the four cardinal directions of inquiry.
Step 3: Exploration Phase (25 mins)
Students pick a topic they are currently studying (or a personal interest) and apply the Curiosity Compass. They should find one New Fact (North), identify one Mystery (South), connect it to a Personal Experience (East), and ask a deep 'Why' (West).
Teacher Tip: Move around the room and "challenge" their questions. If a question is too easy to answer, ask: "How could we make this question bigger?"
Step 4: The Wonder Log (10 mins)
Students reflect in their Wonder Log . This is their permanent record of inquiry. Encourage them to find one "Subject Bridge" (how their topic connects to a different school subject).

Question Starters
What would happen if...?
Why might someone think...?
How does this relate to...?
What is the story behind...?
What is missing from...?
Discussion Prompts
"I used to think... but now I wonder..."
"This reminds me of when..."
"A different perspective might be..."
"I'm curious about the connection between X and Y."
Differentiation & Extensions
For Emerging Explorers
Provide "Curiosity Cards" with pre-printed images of everyday objects to prompt basic observational questions (Who, What, Where).
For Advanced Navigators
Have students create a "Inquiry Web" showing how one question in Science leads to a question in History and then a question in Ethics.
Cross-Curricular Challenge
Dedicate a "Curiosity Corner" in the classroom where students can post sticky notes with questions that come up during any subject throughout the week.

The Mystery Map
Most people think learning is about collecting answers.
Explorers know learning is about asking better questions.
"Millions saw the apple fall, but Newton was the one who asked why."
— Bernard Baruch
What do you wonder today?
Beware of Dead Ends!
Closed Questions
Answers are usually "Yes" or "No"
The conversation stops immediately
"What year did this happen?"
Open Questions
Answers require thought and detail
Leads to even more discoveries
"Why did they make that choice?"

The New Facts
Before we can explore, we need to know where we are standing.
Identify the "Hard Evidence"
"What are the 3 main parts of this process?"
Define the Keywords
"What is the definition of 'Photosynthesis'?"
S
SOUTH
Southern Secrets
Every topic has shadows—places where information is missing.
Find the Unseen
"What part of this story wasn't told in the book?"
Identify the Unknowns
"What do scientists still not understand about this?"

Eastern Echoes
Knowledge is useless if it doesn't live inside your own experience.

Task 1: Dead Ends vs. Open Trails
Read the questions below. If the question leads to a one-word answer and "stops" the discovery, it's a Dead End . If it leads to deeper thinking and more questions, it's an Open Trail . Circle your choice.
"What color is the statue's cape?"
Dead End
Open Trail
"How might the city be different if the river dried up?"
