Cozy Connection Quilt
Weaving an inclusive 2nd and 3rd grade classroom community
GRADE LEVEL
2nd - 3rd Grade
DURATION
60 Minutes
Big Objective
Students will identify their unique personal strengths and discover at least three common bonds with classmates, combining individual paper patches into a collaborative community quilt.
Materials Checklist
"My Quilt Patch" activity sheets (1 per student)
"Stitch Connection Cards" cut sheets
Classroom Projector (for accompanying Slide Deck)
Crayons, markers, colored pencils, scissors
A large poster paper or bulletin board space
Glue sticks or colorful washi tape
Quick Prep
Pre-cut the Stitch Connection Cards (4 per student).
Draw a giant grid outline on a backing poster board to guide patchwork placement.
1 Warm-Up: Stitching Our Circle
10 Mins
Gather students in a circle on the rug. Show a real warm blanket or display the Introduction Slide . Ask students: "What makes a blanket cozy?" (Warmth, soft fabric, layers). Explain that our class is like a cozy patchwork quilt—made of different, wonderful patches stitched together.
Discussion Prompt: "Just like patches on a blanket, each of us has a special pattern, color, and story. If you were a blanket, what color would you be today and why?"
2 Activity: Designing Personal Patches
20 Mins
Distribute the "My Quilt Patch" Activity Sheet to every student. Model how to fill out each section of the patch before students begin working.
Step A
Self-Portrait Patch: Students draw a colorful picture of themselves doing something they love (e.g., reading, playing soccer, dancing).
Step B
Golden Thread: Students write down one "Super Strength" (e.g., being a good listener, helping clean up, drawing amazing animals).
Step C
Patch Patterns: Students color the background using their favorite primary and warm colors, ensuring no white spaces remain outside writing lines.
Teacher Tip: Circulate during writing and assist emergent writers by scribing their thoughts or helping them sound out words. Encourage highly colorful illustrations!

Instructional Guide
3 Cooperative Game: The Stitch Seekers Match
15 Mins
Give each student a strip of 4 Stitch Connection Cards . The objective is to mingle, talk to different friends, and discover shared common bonds.
Game Instructions
Students find a partner and compare cards.
If they share a match (e.g., both love soccer), they write their partner's name on that card block.
Students move to a new classmate to find other connections.
Teacher Scaffolding
Provide sentence starters:
"Hi! Do you like ___?"
"Yes, I do! Let's sign each other's card!"
Ensure children who feel shy are paired up with gentle, enthusiastic helpers.
4 Assembly: Patching It Together
10 Mins
Gather students back in front of the giant backing poster board. Have students cut out their quilt patch neatly. Students will take turns coming up to place their patch in a giant, beautiful grid.
Creating Shared Borders: Use colorful tape or a dark marker to draw "stitches" linking all the borders together, symbolically joining every single student's unique identity into one solid masterpiece.
5 Reflection: Cozy Conversation Corner
5 Mins
Instruct students to look at the finished Connection Quilt. Ask three key guiding questions to help synthesize their learning:
Question 1
"What do you notice when you look at our quilt as a whole?"
Question 2
"What is one brand-new strength you learned about a classmate?"
Question 3
"How does a quilt show that we all belong in this classroom?"
Differentiated Strategies
For Emergent Learners: Provide a pre-selected vocabulary bank of common strengths (kind, creative, helpful, listener) with icons to color and stick.
For Advanced Learners: Encourage writing complex sentences about how their individual strength helps make the whole classroom a better place.

What is a Patchwork Quilt?
Slide 2 of 4
A quilt is a cozy, warm blanket. It is not made from just one giant piece of cloth.
Instead, it is made of many different patches. Each patch has its own pattern, color, and story!
"Just like patches on a blanket, every single one of us brings special strengths to our classroom!"
