Cool Head Coaching Guide
De-escalation, Respectful Disagreement & Compliance Protocol
Session Time 20-25 Mins
Core Objective:
Empower student to replace reactive backtalk with high-status respectful advocacy phrase templates.
Instructional Tone:
Executive coaching, not disciplinary lecture. Frame self-control as "leader power" & social maturity.
Prerequisite Check:
Deliver when student is regulated (Baseline Zone Green), not immediately after an active crisis.
The P.A.U.S.E. Framework
P Press Mute
Count 3 seconds silently before reacting.
A Acknowledge
Prove you heard: "I hear you asking me to..."
U Use Template
Select a respectful power phrase.
S Soft Tone
Level 2 volume, flat shoulders, neutral eye contact.
E Execute/Follow
Follow directive first; request debrief after.
Intervention Flow (Phase 1 & 2)
1
Coaching Buy-In & Status Framing 3 Mins
Script: "In 5th grade, your voice matters. But screaming or snapping makes adults shut down. Today we're unlocking communication scripts that make people actually listen to you and take you seriously."
Key Anchor: Contrast Reactive Reaction (low power, loses control) vs Strategic Response (high power, commands respect).
2
Dissecting the "Backtalk Trap" 4 Mins
Ask student: "What physical sensation happens right before you snap? (Hot cheeks, clenched jaw, racing heart)?"
❌ Trap Habit: "Whatever, this is stupid / No way!" (Creates instant confrontation, triggers consequence).
✅ Pro Shift: "I see where you're coming from, but..." (Preserves relationship, opens negotiation).

1-on-1 Coaching Implementation
Phrase Templates, Roleplays & Troubleshooting
Phase 3 & 4
Step 3: The 4 Core Respectful Phrase Templates (6 Mins)
1. Asking for Clarification / Fairness
"I understand the rule, but could you help me see why...?"
Replaces: "Why do I always have to do this?!"
2. Delaying / Finishing a Thought
"May I finish this one sentence, then transition?"
Replaces: "Stop rushing me! I'm not done!"
3. Regulating Overwhelm
"I'm feeling frustrated right now. Can I take 2 minutes to reset?"
Replaces: Slamming materials / "I hate this class!"
4. Scheduling a Private Conference
"I'll follow directions now, but can we talk at recess about this?"
Replaces: Arguing publicly in front of peers.
Step 4: 3-Round Simulation Coaching (7 Mins)
Round 1: Low Heat
Coach prompts: "Put Chromebook away immediately." Student practices 3-sec pause + Template 2.
Round 2: Medium Heat
Coach prompts unfair redirect: "Move seats right now." Student practices Template 4 with Level 2 tone.
Round 3: High Heat Challenge
Coach interrupts fun task. Student catches their own impulse and executes full PAUSE protocol.
Coaching Pitfalls & Quick Adjustments
| Student Roadblock | What It Really Means | Coach Correction Prompt |
|---|
| "It's unfair, so I shouldn't have to listen." | Confuses obedience with agreement. Feels powerless. | "You don't have to agree inside. You do have to follow the procedure so your message gets heard later." |
| Says words politely but with eye rolls/sighs. | Passive resistance; testing if words alone pass. | "Your words were strong, but your shoulders spoke back. Let's do a re-take with quiet posture." |
| "Other kids talk back and get away with it." | Deflecting accountability to avoid vulnerability. | "We are building your reputation as a leader. What they do won't determine your success." |
Secret Classroom Signal: Agree on a discreet tap (e.g., coach taps two fingers on desk edge) as a reminder to activate the 3-second PAUSE.
