Big Ideas
Belonging is a feeling created when we are seen, valued, and welcomed as our unique selves. In this lesson, students learn that celebrating differences makes our circle stronger, and they practice simple, powerful actions to make sure nobody feels left out.

- Chart paper and 1 thick marker
Teacher Prep Hint Cut out the Discussion Cards beforehand. Keep them in a small basket or envelope for easy student group work.
Lesson Walkthrough (Part 1)

Warm-Up: The Welcome Web
Have students stand in a circle. Hold a ball of yarn or toss a soft plush toy. Before tossing, share one unique thing about yourself (e.g., "I love sketching" or "I speak two languages"). Toss the ball to a peer, holding onto your piece of yarn. The peer catches, shares their unique trait, holds the line, and tosses.
Debrief Question: "Look at this beautiful web we made! What would happen if we pulled out even one thread? Our group is strong because every single one of us belongs in this web."

Core Concept: The Three Active Inclusion Keys
Draw a large empty heart or circle on the board. Ask: "What does it feel like when we are left out of a game or conversation?" Write feeling words outside the heart (lonely, heavy, cold). Then ask: "What does belonging feel like?" Write feelings inside the heart (warm, bright, safe, exciting). Teach students the Three Welcome Steps to invite others in:
1. Look & Smile
Eye contact and a warm smile show you are open.
2. Slide Over
Physically open up the circle or make physical space.
3. Share the Play
Invite them with a direct question or prompt.

Guided Practice: Inclusion Investigators
Divide the class into small groups of 3-4. Distribute 1-2 pre-cut **Inclusion Investigators Discussion Cards** to each group. Have students take turns reading the simple, relatable scenario out loud.
Group Action
Students talk through the challenge, finding ways to show empathy to the left-out child in the card.
Roleplay Prompt
Encourage groups to act out their responses using the 3 Welcome Steps (Look/Smile, Slide, Share).

Hands-On Activity: My Welcome Wheel
Hand out the **Welcome Wheels Activity Sheet**. Guide students to identify their personal strengths, appreciate peer differences, and design three custom "Welcome Actions" they can use on the playground, in the lunchroom, and in the classroom.
Have them use crayons or colored pencils to color their wheels, turning it into an artistic keepsake or a bulletin board project.

Closing: The Circle Pledge
Gather the class back into a circle. Ask a few volunteers to share one Welcome Action from their Welcome Wheel. End the session by reading the **Circle Pledge** together:

Pro Facilitator Tips & Support
For Shy or Quiet Students
Some kids find direct verbal invitations scary. Encourage non-verbal invitations like the Slide Over or passing a game piece/marker silently to include a classmate.
Extension Idea
Have students serve as "Inclusion Detectives" during recess, silently looking for classmates practicing the Welcome Steps and leaving anonymous positive notes.

• Active Action: How can you use the "Slide Over" strategy here?

The Busy Art Table
Three students gathered all the glitter markers to their side of the table. Sam is trying to reach them but can't, so he sighs and draws in grey.
• Empathy Check: How does it feel when tools are kept out of reach?
• Active Action: How can you invite Sam to share the fun?
