Facilitator Tip
Cheerleaders are often trained to keep a smile on their faces no matter what. Create a "brave space" where it's okay to admit that things are stressful. Validation is the first step toward effective management.
Stress Management Activity Guide Stress-Busting Playbook
A practical guide for high school cheerleaders to manage high-pressure moments and build team resilience through relaxation and sharing.
This guide contains hands-on activities to reduce physical tension and foster a supportive team environment. Use these "plays" during practice, before competitions, or whenever the team feels the heat.
Activity 1: Guided Relaxation Exercise
Step 1: Set the Scene
Find a comfortable seated position or lie down. Ensure everyone has enough space and feels safe in the environment. Silence phones and close eyes if comfortable.
Objective
Reduce physical and mental tension to improve focus and recovery.
Deep Breathing Cycle
4
Inhale (Nose)
4
Hold Breath
4
Exhale (Mouth)
Repeat for 3-5 minutes or until the "Spirit Squad" feels a calm, relaxed state.
Step 3: Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR)
Lead students through tightening and relaxing muscle groups sequentially (feet to head).
The Coach's Script: "Tense your toes... hold for 3... now release completely. Feel the weight of your feet against the floor. Now move to your calves..."
Activity 2: The Spirit Huddle (Sharing)
Instructions
The Sharing Circle: Form a circle. Invite each participant to share one personal stress management technique that helps during routines or school.
Group Reflection: Ask how these strategies help during high-pressure moments (stunts, performances). Look for common themes.
Validation: Emphasize that diverse strategies strengthen the team.
Reflection Prompt 1
"How does this strategy help you keep your focus during a difficult stunt?"
Reflection Prompt 2
"What is a common theme we noticed in everyone's coping tools?"
Facilitator Pro-Tips
Maintain a calm, positive, and encouraging demeanor throughout.
Provide gentle guidance if anyone feels overwhelmed.
Encourage practice outside the structured group setting.
Remind them: Stress management is a skill that takes practice!

What is
Stress?
It's your body's reaction to a challenge or demand. In cheerleading, it's that "fight or flight" feeling before a stunt.
It can help you focus (Short-term)
It can cause burnout (Long-term)
Physical Impact
Fast heart rate
Shallow breathing
Tense shoulders
Difficulty focusing
The Box Breath Play
Use this cycle during a routine's break or before you step onto the blue mat.

Hold 4
Exhale 4

RELAX
Tense & Release
Cheerleading requires total muscle control. Let's practice releasing that control to lower stress.
1
Tense your toes and feet (Hold for 3)
2
Release and feel the weight vanish
3
Move up to calves, thighs, and hands
The Spirit Huddle
"What's one play in your personal playbook for staying calm?"
Think About:
• High-pressure stunts
• Pre-performance jitters
• Balancing grades & cheer
Ask the Team:
• How did that play help?
• Can we use it in other ways?
