CASELOAD FIRST-AID GUIDE
Session Duration
10 Minutes Max
Rapid Intake Objective
To rapidly establish a psychological baseline, identify critical triggers, map peer-and-staff safety nets, and formalize an immediate classroom coping strategy with high school students (9th-12th) during initial crisis or scheduled intake.
Intake Timeline & Pacing
Min 0-2
Rapport De-escalation (The Soft Entry)
Establish safety. State the purpose non-defensively: "My room is a pit stop, not a principal's office." Use card prompt starters.
Min 2-5
Active Map & Inventory Completion
Have the student fill out the My Safety Net Worksheet . Assist verbally but let them write. Avoid over-analysis during this phase.
Min 5-8
Action Verification & Coping Choice
Identify one concrete "Go-To" coping mechanism and identify the "Pass Holder" teacher. Establish high-school appropriate boundaries.
Min 8-10
Sign-Off & Safety Card Transfer
Cut or fill out the pocket-sized "Self-Advocacy Pass" on the worksheet. Give it to the student as their physical token of access.
High-Impact Clinical Verbal Scripts
To Disarm Defensive Students
"Hey, I know being pulled in here can feel like you're in trouble. It's actually the opposite. My job is to make sure your teachers know your boundaries so you don't get pushed to a breaking point. Let's build your control plan."
When Student Resists Checklist
"You don't have to tell me why these things bug you. Just check the boxes that apply so I can advocate for you behind the scenes. You own the remote control here. I'm just setting the channels."

High School Resistance Profiles
Profile A: "The Silent Stare" (Avoidant/Withdrawn)
Counselor Action: Do not force eye contact. Slide the worksheet and a pen over. Say: "We don't have to talk today. Just point to or check two items you want me to tell your teachers to stop doing." Give them space.
Profile B: "The Reactor" (Performative/Hostile)
Counselor Action: De-escalate audience. Validate autonomy immediately. "You have 100% control over who gets this card. If you don't want your teachers to have it, we keep it in my locked drawer as a backup plan."
Clinical Escalation Checklist
TIER 1: Baseline
Frustrated, fidgety, minor head on desk. Action: Allow desk self-regulation using the agreed-upon worksheet sensory choice.
TIER 2: Escalated
Verbal refusal, exit behavior, pacing. Action: Initiate "Go-To Teacher" flashcard system. 3-minute transit window to counselor office.
TIER 3: Crisis
Verbal threat, hyperventilation, complete shut-down. Action: Immediate clinical backup. Utilize county mobile response or designated building safety staff.
Administrative Integration (The "Behind-the-Scenes" Magic)
Digital Flag: Tag the student's SIS file with a private counselor note stating "Holds self-advocacy safety pass with [Counselor Name]."
Teacher Briefing: Send a quick form email to the student's 7-period teachers with their checked "Trigger Warning" list. Frame it as proactive classroom management, not a free pass.
Revisit Frequency: Redo this specific inventory at semester changes or immediately after any major disciplinary referrals.
