Calm Body Lesson Plan SEL Teacher Guide Grades K–1 • 40–45 Mins
The Calm Body Compass
Focus Skill Interoception & Self-Soothing
Developmental Rationale
Before young children reach emotional dysregulation (the "meltdown" or "red zone"), their bodies transmit distinct physiological alarm bells. By learning to read their internal compass—heart rate, belly flutters, muscle grip, and breath speed—early learners can activate physical anchors before fight-or-flight overtakes their cognitive brain.
Learning Targets ("I Can")
• Identify: Name 4 physical body clues (fast heart, tight fists, fluttery tummy, scrunched shoulders).
• Choose: Select 1 of 4 portable calming anchors to reset their nervous system.
• Self-Regulate: Practice taking calm-down action before big feelings overflow.
Required Materials
• Calm Body Slides: Presentation for interactive modeling.
• Activity Sheet: 1 per student (crayons or colored pencils).
• Pocket Compass Cards: Pre-cut for student desks or Calm Corner.
• Chime or Soft Bell: For audio transition cues.
Instructional Flow • Part 1 & Part 2
Part 1: The Body Weather Report (8 Mins) Whole Group Rug Time
Gather students on the rug in a circle. Ask everyone to place one hand on their chest and close their eyes for 10 seconds.
Teacher Script: "Did you know your body is a weather station? Before a rainstorm starts outside, dark clouds roll in and wind blows. Inside our bodies, before a big storm of mad or sad bursts out, our body whispers early clues! Today we become Body Detectives."
Part 2: The 4 Alarm Bells (12 Mins) Interactive Modeling
Display Slides 3–6. Teach the gestures and vocal cues for each physical distress signal:
1. Hummingbird Heart: Heart beats fast like fluttering wings in chest.
2. Stormy Tummy: Butterflies, twists, knots, or boiling rumble.
3. Volcano Fists: Hands curl tight, ready to erupt or push.
4. Scrunched Turtle: Shoulders hike up to ears, jaw locks tight.

Part 3: Embodied Practice & Part 4: Integration
20 Mins Practice
1
Starfish Hand Trace
Spread one hand like an open starfish. Trace up a finger with the opposite pointer finger while inhaling through the nose, then trace down while exhaling like cooling soup.
Best for: Hummingbird Heart & Fast Breath
2
Butterfly Tap
Cross wrists over the chest, hooking thumbs together to make butterfly wings. Tap fingers slowly and rhythmically: left, right, left, right while closing eyes.
Best for: Stormy Tummy & Worried Thoughts
3
Lemon Squeeze & Melt
Imagine holding a giant juicy lemon in each hand. Squeeze all the juice out as hard as possible for 3 seconds: 1, 2, 3! Then drop the lemons and feel warm honey melt.
Best for: Volcano Fists & Angry Energy
4
Mountain Tree Roots
Press both feet flat into the floor. Imagine roots growing down through the rug deep into the earth. Drop shoulders down away from ears. Feel unbreakable and steady.
Best for: Scrunched Turtle & Wobbly Body
Part 4: Partner "Compass Rescue" Game (10 Mins)
Pair students up. Partner A makes a body clue posture (e.g. tight fists). Partner B acts as the Compass Guide and coaches the rescue anchor (e.g. "Squeeze your lemons and melt!"). Partners switch roles after two turns.
Observation Rubric: Look for children actively pausing, taking a full breath cycle, and physically relaxing their body part rather than rushing through the motion.
Differentiation & Support
Kinesthetic / Sensory: Provide squishy fidgets for the lemon squeeze if finger resistance is challenging.
Emergent Multilingual: Use the illustrated Pocket Compass cards for non-verbal choice selection.
Low Muscle Tone: Practice Tree Roots in a chair with feet flat on a sensory foot cushion.
Calm Corner Protocol
Check-In Step: Student points to where the storm is located on the Body Weather poster.
Anchor Step: Student performs 3 rounds of their chosen anchor.
Check-Out Step: Student verifies breath is slow before returning to learning activities.

Listen to your body's early whispers before big storms begin!
Today's Mission: Learn 4 Body Clues & 4 Calming Anchors
Your Body Weather
Early Clues
Before a Rainstorm...
The sky turns gray, the wind blows cold, and thunder rumbles far away!
Inside Our Body...
Before we shout or cry, our body sends whisper clues to tell us: "Help me feel safe!"
Let's meet the 4 Body Clues together!
Clue 1: Hummingbird Heart
Chest Clue
Does your chest go thump-thump-thump like tiny hummingbird wings flapping fast?
It happens when we are scared, frustrated, or rushing!
Try It Right Now!
Put your hand over your heart. Tap two fingers quickly like a little bird!
When your heart beats fast, your compass says: Slow Down!
Clue 2: Stormy Tummy
Belly Clue
Does your belly feel tight like a knot, fluttery with wild bugs, or bubbly like boiling soup?
Our tummy is very smart! It feels worried feelings before our brain does.
Try It Right Now!
Gently hold both hands on your stomach. Can you feel your belly rise and fall?
When your belly twists, your compass says: Gentle Care!
Clue 3: Volcano Fists
Hands Clue
Are your hands squeezing tightly into hard rocks? Do your palms feel hot and ready to push or rip?
Tight hands mean anger or frustration is building like hot lava!
Try It Right Now!
Make tight rock fists for 2 seconds... now open your fingers wide like sunshine!
When your hands make rocks, your compass says: Release!
Clue 4: Scrunched Turtle
Shoulders & Face
Are your shoulders creeping up to your ears? Is your forehead wrinkly and your teeth pressed hard together?
Like a turtle pulling into its shell when it feels nervous or overwhelmed!
Try It Right Now!
Pull your shoulders all the way to your ears... now drop them down soft and loose!
When your shoulders hike up, your compass says: Let Go!
