Materials
Slide Deck, Calm Corner Poster, Calm Choices Activity Sheet, Exit Ticket, breathing prop or chime.
Key Vocabulary
Angry / Mad • Hot Body • Slow Breath • Wall Push • Safe Space
1
Circle Warm-Up: The Volcano Body (7 Mins)
Engage & Notice
Gather students on the carpet in crisscross position. Ask: "Have you ever felt so mad that your body felt like a hot, bubbling volcano?"
Teacher Script:
"It is 100% okay to feel angry. Everyone feels mad sometimes! But when our body gets tight fists, stompy feet, or hot cheeks, our body is asking for help to cool down. Today we are learning four superhero calm-down tools!"
2
Direct Modeling: 4 Calm Body Helpers (12 Mins)
Teach & Model
Teach each strategy with memorable actions, verbal chants, and immediate choral practice:
1. Flower & Candle Breath
Hold up one hand like a fragrant flower (sniff in deep 1-2-3), hold up index finger like a candle (slowly blow out 1-2-3-4). Repeat 3 times.
2. Wall Push & Turtle Hug
Put hands flat against the wall, push with strong muscles for 5 seconds to release tension, then give your own ribs a slow, squeeze "turtle hug."
3. Quiet Space & Count to 5
Walk safely to the calm corner. Sit with a sensory cushion or plush, close eyes, and tap each finger while counting softly to 5.
4. Words & Big Choices
Teach sentence frame: "I feel mad because ____. I need ____." (e.g., "I need a turn" or "I need a teacher's help").

3
Active Practice: "Red Light, Calm Light" (8 Mins)
Movement Game
Students stand spaced apart on the rug. Teacher announces a playful frustration scenario (e.g., "Your block tower got knocked down!" ).
Action: Students show a pretend "angry body" (scrunched eyebrows, stomping feet).
Signal: Teacher chimes or says "Calm Light!" and holds up a strategy card (Breath, Wall Push, Count, or Words).
Reset: All students switch instantly into that calming tool for 10 seconds until their bodies feel soft and relaxed.
4
Calm Choices Sheet & Exit Ticket (10 Mins)
Application
Students move to tables to complete the Calm Choices Activity Sheet . They circle their favorite strategy and trace the calm body helper words.
Formative Check: Conduct a 2-minute carpet debrief using the Calm Check Exit Ticket . Ask each student to give a thumbs-up when they can show how they will breathe or ask for space when mad.
Differentiation & Accommodations
Sensory Seekers
Provide wall-push targets or weighted lap pads. Physical resistance helps proprioceptive calming faster than sitting still.
Emergent Bilinguals
Use visual cue cards with clear icons (flower/candle, wall, stop sign). Pair gestures with Spanish/home language feeling words.
Nonverbal / Shy
Provide a personal ring of visual "Help Me / Need Space" choice cards they can point to or hand to the teacher.
Calm Corner Classroom Routine
The Calm Corner is not time-out or punishment ; it is a safe self-reset station. Set a 3-minute liquid visual timer. When timer finishes, the child rejoins group with a fist-bump.
