Do Now: "What Slows You Down?" (5 Mins)
Active Stand & Vote
Students open page 1 of their packet to check their primary "Hallway Speed Bump." Prompt them to review the 6 choices: Lost Papers, Forgetting Gear, Locker Avalanche, Schedule Confusion, Hallway Chat Trap, or Extra Locker Trips.
Active Participation Routine: Call out each obstacle. Students give a silent Thumb Gauge (Up = major daily issue, Sideways = sometimes, Down = never) or walk to the designated room corner.
Teacher Talk Track: "In middle school, nobody misses class on purpose—we lose 15 seconds here and 30 seconds there. Today we are eliminating the friction."

Mini-Lesson: The 3-Zone Locker & Backpack Triage (10 Mins)
Modeling & Visual Notes
Locker Architecture (3 Vertical Zones)
Top Shelf (Power Stack): Binders, text modules, notebook spines facing outward. Zero loose handouts.
Middle Hooks (Quick Hang): Backpack, heavy winter coat, gym bag off the floor.
Bottom Floor (Ground Crew): Sneakers, lunchbox, emergency pencil stash. Friday cleanout ritual.
Backpack Triage Rule
The "One Binder/Folder" Rule: Color-coded dividers or pockets. Handouts go directly inside or into recycling.
Tech Sanctuary: Chromebook goes in padded sleeve; charger stays rolled with a velcro tie.
Weight Check: Take home only what is needed for homework tonight.

3
Active Practice: The 4-Minute Passing Drill (10 Mins)
Role-Play & Math Breakdown
Middle school passing periods average 4 minutes (240 seconds). Teach students the exact 5-step automated reflex sequence:
STEP 1 Hear Bell Ring
STEP 2 Check Schedule
STEP 3 Grab 2-Period Block
STEP 4 Walk Directly
STEP 5 Socialize at Door
The 2-Minute Hallway Trap Role-Play: Select two student volunteers to act out meeting by the water fountain. Time 120 seconds on screen. Show how fast 2 minutes disappear, leaving only 30 seconds to run upstairs, unlock a locker, and cross the threshold. Rule: "Walk and talk toward your next room—never stop in the mid-hallway bottleneck."
4
Activity: Locker & Schedule Showdown Challenge (15 Mins)
Partner Problem-Solving
The Mission Prompt: "You just left Math (2nd floor). Next is ELA (Room 104), followed immediately by Science (Room 108), then Lunch. Your ELA notebook is in your locker (3rd floor). Science folder is in your backpack. You must return your borrowed Chromebook to the media center before lunch. Passing period: 4 minutes."
Trap Strategy (High Risk tardy)
Sprint to 3rd floor locker for ELA -> sit through ELA -> run back to locker -> carry Chromebook into science -> panic at lunch bell.
Master Strategy ("Block Loading")
Visit locker once: Grab BOTH ELA notebook and Science folder together. Head to 1st floor. No locker trip needed between ELA and Science!
5
Battle Plan & Differentiation Strategies (10 Mins)
Synthesis
ADHD / Executive Support
Tape a laminated mini-schedule inside locker at eye-level. Use neon tape on notebook spines matching room colors.
High-Anxiety / Tardy Phobia
Identify a "Transit Buddy" on identical floor paths. Pre-assign locker visits: Morning, Before Lunch, End of Day only.
Exit Ticket Accountability
Students tear off the bottom slip on Page 2 and hand to teacher at door with one concrete habit commitment for the week.

What Slows You Down Most?
Vote With Your Fingers: 1 to 6
1
Paper Avalanche
Handouts crumpled at the bottom of bags or lockers.
2
Forgotten Gear
Leaving notebooks, pens, or chargers in the wrong room.
3
Disaster Locker
Takes 90 seconds just to find one textbook.
4
Schedule Fog
Pausing at every hallway corner to figure out next class.
5
Hallway Chat Trap
A "quick two-minute talk" that eats the whole bell.
6
Locker Ping-Pong
Visiting your locker between every single period.
Which one is your biggest time bandit this month? Keep it in mind as we build your system.
Blueprint 1
The 3-Zone Locker Architecture
Gravity Works For You
1 Top Shelf
The Power Stack
Books & binders stand upright with spines facing outward.
Zero loose sheets allowed on this shelf.
Rule: Color-code spine labels by class
2 Middle Hooks
Gear Off Floor
Coat, heavy jacket, or gym bag hangs on the built-in hooks.
Keeps the locker mouth clear so nothing tumbles out on open.
Rule: Hang immediately upon arrival
3 Bottom Floor
Ground Crew
Lunchbox, athletic sneakers, and backup supplies live here.
Friday 2-Minute Reset: Throw out old wrappers and stale paper.
Rule: Empty floor = lightning access
Pro Move: Tape your daily bell schedule on the inside locker door at eye level. Save 45 seconds every trip
Blueprint 2
Backpack Triage: Travel Light
Your Mobile Command Center
The "One Binder" Protocol
Never shove loose papers into bag pockets. Loose paper dies in pockets.
Left Pocket: Action Needed
Homework to complete tonight or forms needing signatures.
