Trail of Clues Slides Presentation Cyber-Defense Unit: Lesson 1
TRAIL OF CLUES
How your digital footprint provides a roadmap for predators—and how to erase the trail.
The Detective Game
Mission: Profile Audit
"Imagine you're a private investigator. You've been given a single social media profile of a 'target.' Within 5 minutes, what can you find out about them?"
Where do they hang out after school?
What is their biggest insecurity or passion?
When will they be home alone?
Crucial Concept
Predators don't just "find" victims. They **study** them. They look for vulnerabilities through the breadcrumbs you leave online.
The Digital Breadcrumb Trail
Visual Clues
School logos on shirts, street signs in backgrounds, and geotags.
Emotional State
Venting about parents, feeling lonely, or needing money.
Shared Interests
Specific games, bands, or creators used to "fake" a connection.
Intelligence Gathering: Traffickers spend weeks observing your profile to build a "custom-made" person that you will trust instantly.
The Grooming Pipeline
1
Observation
They watch your public posts for hobbies and moods.
2
Contact
A "friend request" or message about a shared interest.
3
Rapport
Building trust by pretending to have the same life struggles.
4
Isolation
"Don't tell your parents, they won't understand our bond."
DEFENSE MODE: LOCK DOWN
Private is Default
Ensure only confirmed friends can see your posts and photos.
No Geotagging
Turn off location services for social apps. Never post your home or school address.
Audit Your "Friends"
Remove anyone you haven't actually met in person. Real life only.
Class Discussion
"If a stranger knows your favorite dog breed, the name of your math teacher, and that you're sad about a breakup... does that mean they are your friend, or does it mean they are a good detective?"

MISSION OBJECTIVE: Analyze the fictional profile of "Alex G." below. Identify exactly what information a predator could use to target or manipulate them. Be specific.
Alex_G_2012 @AlexG_Gamer
Bio: 🎮 Gamer | ⚽ Central Middle School Varsity | Just trying to survive math... 😭 | DM for Fortnite

"Anyone else love the new update? I need 2,000 V-Bucks but I'm broke. FML."
Intelligence Audit Report
1. GEOGRAPHIC DATA: Where does Alex go? List specific locations found.
2. VULNERABILITY ALERT: What emotional "hooks" or needs does Alex express?
3. THE "PERFECT FRIEND" PLAN: If you were a predator, how would you start a conversation to make Alex trust you immediately?
4. REDACT! List 3 things Alex should delete or change right now.
Critical Reflection
Predators don't just want your address. They want to know your heart . Why is emotional information (like loneliness) more dangerous to share than a street address?

The Stolen Face
Photos are often professional, too perfect, or feature "influencer" lifestyles to build false admiration.
The "New" Account
Account created recently (weeks or months ago) but has thousands of followers (often bought).
Generic Engagement
Comments are mostly emojis or "Great post!" style messages from other suspicious accounts.
The "Opportunity"
Bio always mentions "opportunities," "jobs," or "exclusive groups" to lure you in.
The Investigator's Toolkit
Reverse Image Search
If you're unsure, upload their profile picture to Google Lens or TinEye.
Red Flag:
"If the photo shows up on 50 different websites as a 'stock photo,' it's 100% a fake."
The Consistency Test
Ask specific questions that a local would know, or ask for a very specific photo (e.g., "Take a selfie holding a spoon").
Red Flag:
"If they constantly make excuses for why they can't video call or meet in person, they aren't who they say they are."
Why do they catfish?
Traffickers don't approach you as "scary villains." They approach you as a potential boyfriend, a cool older sibling, or a talent scout.
"They use a mask (the catfish profile) to gain your trust so they can eventually exploit your reality."

The Three Pillars of Manipulation
Flattery
"You're so much more mature than other kids your age. I feel like you're the only one who really gets me."
The Goal: Ego-Building
Wealth
"Why wait for an allowance? I can show you how to make real money right now without a boring job."
The Goal: Greed/Necessity
Affection
"I've never felt this way about anyone before. I want us to be together forever. We're a team."
The Goal: Belonging
Recruitment Scripts: Spotting the Patterns
"Hey, saw your profile. You have such a unique look! I work for a big agency and we're scouting for a new campaign. Your life is about to change forever. We just need to move this chat to WhatsApp/Telegram so we can talk privately. Don't tell your friends yet—I want this to be a surprise for them when you're famous!"
RED FLAG 1: SECRECY
If they ask you not to tell anyone, they are trying to remove your safety net.
RED FLAG 2: PLATFORM JUMPING
Moving to unmonitored apps makes it harder for parents or police to track the grooming.
The Golden Rule of Digital Safety
"If the opportunity requires secrecy, isolation, or rushing, the opportunity is a TRAP."
Your gut is your best firewall. Trust it.

"Hey! I've been following your dance videos. You are too talented to be stuck in that small town. I'm a producer for a major streaming service. We're looking for dancers for a new show. I can send you a $1,000 cash advance today if you sign a digital NDA. But don't mention this to anyone until the contract is final, otherwise the spot might go to someone else. Add me on Snap: @TopTalentDev."
Which manipulative technique is used here?
Flattery (Ego Building)
Financial Incentive (Greed/Need)
Urgency (Fear of missing out)

"Hey, I have some extra high-level skins I don't use. I'd love to give them to you. Add me on Discord so I can send the codes privately. What's your username?"
WHAT IS THE RED FLAG?
The "Gamer" Recruiter
01
Target Selection
Predators look for players who seem lonely, spend a lot of time online, or express frustration with home life.
02
Artificial Bonding
They use "in-game gifts" (skins, currency) to make you feel like you owe them something.
03
Platform Jump
They quickly push to move to Discord, Snapchat, or WhatsApp where game filters don't exist.
The "Friendship" Trap
"They don't start by being creepy. They start by being your favorite teammate. They listen when you're sad and they're always available to play."
Vulnerability Alert:
When they start asking about your real name, school, or if your parents are in the room, the 'game' has changed.
Hard Borders: My Gaming Rules
NO FACE
Never share a photo or turn on a webcam for someone you haven't met in real life.
NO LINKS
Never click on links or "gift codes" sent through chat. They can be used for IP tracking.
NO JUMPING
Keep the conversation in the game. If they want to move to an app, they are hiding something.
The "Stop" Signal
The moment a teammate asks you to do something that makes you feel uncomfortable or weird, that is your signal to Mute, Block, and Tell.
Power Move: The Exit
If someone says: "Come on, don't be a baby. Just send the photo. I thought we were friends."
THE RIGHT MOVE:
"I don't do that. Stop asking."
[BLOCK IMMEDIATELY]
THE WRONG MOVE:
"I'm sorry, I just don't think I can..."
[KEEPING THE CHAT OPEN]
You don't owe a stranger an explanation for your safety.
