UNIT 02: WELL-BEING
Lesson Overview
This lesson destigmatizes stress and provides students with practical, immediate tools for emotional regulation. The goal is to move from reactive stress to proactive well-being management.
Key Learning Objectives
Distinguish between eustress (positive) and distress (negative).
Demonstrate the 5-4-3-2-1 grounding technique.
Draft a personal "Calm Toolkit" with at least 3 actionable strategies.
Prep Checklist
Print "Well-being Map" Worksheets
Cue "Zen Zone Slides"
Create a "Quiet Space" in the classroom
Instructional Roadmap
1
The "Fist" Model of the Brain (10 mins)
Use the hand-fist model to explain the prefrontal cortex vs. the amygdala. Discuss what happens when we "flip our lid" (the stress response).
2
Sensory Immersion (15 mins)
Lead the 5-4-3-2-1 technique slowly. Encourage silence and focus. Debrief: "How does your body feel different now compared to 5 minutes ago?"
3
Toolkit Design (25 mins)
Students work on their Well-being Map. Facilitate a "Tool Swap" where students share one thing that works for them with a partner.
Safety Note
Stress management is a skill, but some stress requires professional support. Remind students of the school counselor's availability and ensure they know that asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness.

1. The Pre-Interview Reset
When you feel the "waiting room jitters," use these three techniques to lower your cortisol levels.
Box Breathing (4-4-4-4)
Inhale for 4, hold for 4, exhale for 4, hold for 4. Repeat 3 times to tell your nervous system you are safe.
The 5-4-3-2-1 Sensory Scan
Discreetly notice 5 things you can see and 4 you can feel (your chair, your notebook) to stay in the present moment.
Reframing Nerves
Tell yourself: "I am excited," not "I am nervous." The physiological feeling is identical—only your mindset changes.
2. Dealing with Imposter Syndrome
Write down three "Truths" about your skills that you can look at right before the interview begins.
The "Oops" Response
What to do if your mind goes blank or you stumble over your words:
1
The Pause: Take a slow sip of water or say, "That's a great question, let me think for a second." Silence is okay.
2
The Pivot: If you realize you answered incorrectly, say, "Actually, I'd like to circle back to that last point to clarify..."
3
The Honest Reset: It's okay to say, "I'm a bit excited about this role—let me take a second to reorganize that thought."
3. The Post-Game Decompression
After the interview, immediately do something that brings you joy or calm. Do not replay the "mistakes" for hours.
