A comprehensive 36-week tier-2 small group counseling curriculum designed for 6th grade boys. Focuses on task initiation without maladaptive behaviors, assertive self-advocacy, emotional regulation, and pro-social communication skills.
Student: "I don't even care about this stupid assignment anyway."
Reframe:"I hear you—it might not be your favorite topic. But not caring is often a shield to avoid feeling stuck. What if you didn't have to care about the topic, but cared about keeping your free time after school? 3 minutes gets it moving."
Student: "The teacher always picks on me the second I ask a question."
Reframe:"Teachers react to how we ask. If we groan or throw our pencil down, they get defensive. In Week 2, we will master the 2-Sentence Voice Command so you get the help you deserve without any drama."
Student: "I'll just do it all at home tonight, I don't need to do it now."
Reframe:"Let's be real with each other: what actually happens when you get home? Video games, dinner, chilling. Doing 3 minutes right now protects your evening freedom."

Generalization Strategy for Classroom Teachers: Send a quick email or printed check-in slip to the 6th-grade team: "Boys in Group 1 are practicing the '3-Minute Ignition' protocol this week. If you notice them stalling, simply tap their desk and quietly say: 'Start your 3-minute timer.' Avoid arguing or lengthy lectures."

Ignition Scenario Cards
Set 2 (Cards 5–8)
Card 05 • Peer Distraction
The Friend Who Keeps Talking
Scenario: Your best friend sits next to you and keeps whispering about a video game while the teacher is monitoring the room. You want to focus but don't want to look uncool.
Old Stall Trap: Engaging in conversation and getting both of you sent to the office.
⚡ 3-Minute Ignition Move: Whisper: "Hold on, give me 3 mins to knock out Q1 so the teacher gets off our backs."
Card 06 • Critical Feedback
The Low Quiz Score
Scenario: The teacher hands back a quiz with a 'D' marked in red and tells everyone to make corrections. You feel a surge of anger and want to crumple the paper.
Old Stall Trap: Shoving the quiz into your backpack and saying "This class is trash."
⚡ 3-Minute Ignition Move: Take 3 deep stealth breaths. Find the simplest problem you missed and re-read the prompt.
Card 07 • Low Energy
The Friday Afternoon Slump
Scenario: It's 7th period on Friday. You are exhausted, hungry, and have zero energy left. The teacher starts a 20-minute independent project.
Old Stall Trap: Daydreaming, staring at the clock, and leaving your desk totally blank.
⚡ 3-Minute Ignition Move: Sit up straight, take a drink of water, and write down just your title and date to get started.
Card 08 • Asking Help
Stuck on Problem #1
Scenario: You tried for 2 minutes, but you genuinely don't understand what the question is asking. You feel embarrassed to raise your hand in front of everyone.
Old Stall Trap: Giving up and pretending you are finished when you haven't written anything.
⚡ 3-Minute Ignition Move: Raise hand calmly and use the 2-sentence script: "I'm stuck on Step 2. Can you clarify what this word means?"
Pit Crew Partner Check Rubric
1. Spot the Stall: Did your partner clearly identify the defense habit?
2. Clear Starter Step: Did they pick a step that takes < 60 seconds?
3. Body Language: Was their posture assertive, calm, and ready to work?
