Self-Esteem Blueprint Program Guide Self-Esteem Blueprint
Program Facilitation Guide
Objective
Apply CBT techniques over 6 weeks to improve self-esteem by identifying negative patterns and practicing positive coping strategies.
Time
6 weeks
30 minutes per session
Audience
Individual 9th Grade Student (Tier 3 Intervention)
Prep & Materials
Review Weekly Content: Spend 15 minutes reviewing the slides and worksheets before each session.
Print Materials: Ensure all student worksheets, journals, and activities are printed and ready.
Supplies: Provide pens, pencils, and colored markers for the Strengths Web activity.
Weekly Roadmap
Week 1: Worth Foundations
Define self-esteem and its impact. Complete the "My Self-Esteem Check-In" worksheet.
Week 2: Mindset Detective
Introduce cognitive distortions (thought traps). Identify distortions using the "Thought Detective" worksheet.
Week 3: Thought Combat
Techniques for challenging thoughts: evidence, alternatives, decatastrophizing. Start the "Thought Challenge Journal".
Week 4: Inner Radiance
Focus on internal validation and personal strengths. Create the "Strengths Web".
Week 5: Resilience Tools
Build a coping toolkit (mindfulness, exercise, expression). Create a personalized "Coping Skills Plan".
Week 6: Enduring Worth
Discuss self-compassion and boundaries. Finalize the "Self-Esteem Action Plan".
Facilitation Tips
1. Safe & Non-Judgmental Space
Validate the student's feelings without rushing to "fix" them. Self-esteem growth requires vulnerability; ensure the student feels heard and accepted.
2. Real-World Relevance
Use 9th-grade examples (e.g., social media comparisons, grades, friend dynamics) to make the abstract CBT concepts concrete.
3. Collaborative Approach
Work with the student. Instead of telling them their thoughts are wrong, guide them to investigate the evidence themselves using a "detective" persona.
4. Pacing
Each session is 30 minutes. Use the slide decks to stay on track. If a discussion becomes particularly deep, it's okay to finish the worksheet as "homework" or carry it over.

Week 2: Catching Cognitive Distortions
Self-Esteem Blueprint Session 02
What Are Cognitive Distortions?
"Sneaky 'thought traps' that trick your brain into seeing things more negatively than they really are."
Biased Thinking
They twist reality to fit a negative story.
Mental Filters
They make us ignore positive facts.
Trap #1: All-or-Nothing Thinking
DOSSIER
The Filter:
Everything is either perfect or a total disaster. No middle ground.
Example:
"I made one mistake on that test. I'm a total failure."
Black & White Thinking
Trap #2: Catastrophizing
Expecting the worst-case scenario for every situation.
Crime Scene
The Chain Reaction:
Stumble on a word
Everyone laughs
I'll never have friends again
TRAP #3
Mind Reading
Assuming you know what others are thinking—and it's usually something bad—without any actual evidence.
"He looked at me weird... he must think I'm annoying."
Trap #4: Personalization
It's All My Fault!
Taking everything personally, even when it has nothing to do with you. Believing you are responsible for things outside your control.
Example: "The teacher is in a bad mood. I must have done something to annoy her."
Is it really about you?
Activity: Thought Detective!
We'll use our detective skills to investigate 4 common scenarios. Your mission: Spot the thought traps!

Thoughts Are Not Always Facts
"Just because you think it, doesn't mean it's true."
Our brains make mistakes
Question the accuracy
Strategy 1: Examine the Evidence
Be your own lawyer!
Evidence FOR
What facts (not feelings) support this thought?
Evidence AGAINST
What facts prove this isn't entirely true?
Case Study:
"I'm terrible at math."
For: I failed the last quiz.
Against: I passed the last semester. I understood Tuesday's homework.
Strategy 2: Seek Alternative Explanations
Is there another way to look at this? What would you tell a best friend who was thinking this?
"My friend didn't text back. They're ignoring me."
Maybe their phone died...
Maybe they're busy...
Maybe they just didn't see it!
Strategy 3: Decatastrophizing
Bring the worst-case scenario back to reality.
The Catastrophe
"If I mess up this presentation, my life is OVER!"
The Reality
"I might feel embarrassed for a bit, but I'll still pass the class."
Ask yourself: "If the worst happened, how would I cope?"
Thought Challenge Journal
Time to put these skills to use! We'll practice challenging a common negative thought using evidence, alternatives, and realistic thinking.
