Body Reset Counselor Guide
Tier 2/3 Behavior Plan
Focus: Autonomic Nervous System & TIPP
Target Audience: 5th Grade (Ages 10-11)
Session Time: 30-40 Minutes
Core Objective: Shift to parasympathetic without verbal co-regulation
1. Kid-Friendly Neurobiology Script (5 Minutes)
Counselor Script: "Think of your brain like a supersonic jet with an autopilot computer. When schoolwork gets hard, your internal smoke detector—the Red Alert Button (Sympathetic Nervous System) —slams on. Your heart pumps fast, your fists clench, and your brain screams 'I need an adult right now or I can't survive!' "
"Here is the secret: talking doesn't turn off a smoke detector. You can't just talk your way out of fight-or-flight. You have to flip your Green Cool-Down Switch (Parasympathetic System) using physical body signals. Today, you're learning 3 physical reset buttons you can activate right at your desk without saying a single word to an adult."
2. School-Adapted TIPP Protocol Breakdown
T
Temperature Reset (Thermal Shock to Vagus Nerve)
15-30 SEC
Action: Student firmly presses a cold stainless-steel water bottle, cold compress, or ice pack against inner wrists or cheeks.
Why it works: Triggers the mammalian dive reflex; immediately lowers heart rate and blood pressure through direct vagal nerve stimulation without social demand.
P
Paced Box Breathing (Visual Square Desk Strip)
4 CYCLES (64 SEC)
Action: Student traces the laminated 4x4 desk strip: Inhale 4s (Up), Hold 4s (Across), Exhale 4s (Down), Hold 4s (Across).
Why it works: Extended holding and exhaling activates the vagal brake, physically preventing hyperventilation and oxygen dumping.
P
Paired Muscle Release (Fist / Stress Anchor Clench)
3 REPS (30 SEC)
Action: Squeeze desk ball or grip fists at 100% tension for 5 seconds while holding breath, then snap-release fingers into open limp palms while exhaling completely.
Why it works: Releases sympathetic motor tension stored in trapezius and forearm muscles during fight/flight posturing.

In-Session Drill & Classroom Handoff
Session 1 Protocol
Active In-Session Simulation (15 Minutes)
Step 1: Baseline Pulse Check
Have student place two fingers on their neck carotid or wrist pulse. Rate internal tension from 1 (Calm Waters) to 10 (Full Red Alert).
Step 2: Mild Stress Induction
Provide a fast-paced 60-second math sprint or backward alphabet challenge to induce mild situational pressure without threat.
Step 3: The 90-Second Silent Protocol
Counselor gives zero verbal soothing . Point to the desk visual strip: 20s wrist ice press, 4 box breaths, 3 muscle clench/releases. Measure pulse and re-rate tension score.
Counselor Troubleshooting & Adaptation
Observed Challenge Counselor Intervention Demands adult speak: "Tell me if this is right!" Point silently to desk breathing strip; tap wrist to signal cold-press reset. Avoid vocal engagement for 60 seconds. Breath rushing (counting too fast) Model fingertip pacing along the card edge. Match the 4-second edge transit smoothly. Sensory aversion to ice or cold Substitute with cold metal thermos surface or evaporative cooling (wet wipe on wrists).
Classroom Staff Co-Regulation Fading Directive
Target Behavior to Extinguish: Adult verbally coaxing and soothing the student when task frustration begins.
New Staff Protocol: When student exhibits signs of agitation, staff member quietly places the cold bottle/desk strip in front of student, taps the card once, and steps away 3-5 feet . No questioning, no comforting words. Allow the physiological reset to do the work.

Brain Coach Counselor Guide
Non-Human Anchors
Focus: Cognitive Reframing & Self-Talk
Core Mechanism: Auditory-to-Visual Anchor Fading
Session Duration: 35 Minutes
Primary Deliverable: Laminated Brain Coach Desk Cards
1. Why Verbal Reassurance Must Be Replaced
When anxious or task-avoidant students feel dysregulated, they reflexively pull adult staff into verbal loops ("Is this right?", "I can't do this!", "Stay with me!" ). Each verbal response from staff momentarily soothes the anxiety, but unintentionally strengthens co-regulation dependence .
To foster true distress tolerance, the reassuring voice must be shifted into static, permanent non-human artifacts (laminated cards, desk visual anchors) that the student can touch, read, and own without needing an adult present.
2. Facilitator Script for 5th Graders
Counselor: "Have you ever noticed that when a difficult worksheet lands on your desk, your brain starts broadcasting panic commercials? It says: 'You're gonna fail!' or 'You have to ask a teacher right this second!' "
"When a teacher comes over and tells you 'You're okay, you can do it,' that feels good for 2 minutes—until the teacher walks away. Then the panic commercials start playing again. Today, we're installing a Brain Coach right on your desk. These cards are your new internal safety anchors."
The 3 Targeted Reframing Statements
1
"I feel frustrated right now, but I am safe."
Disentangles somatic agitation (racing heart, sweaty palms) from environmental danger.
2
"I don't need help for 3 minutes; let me try step 1 on my own."
Creates an intentional delay buffer between initial distress and reflexive adult calling.
3
"Discomfort is uncomfortable, but it is not dangerous."
Teaches distress tolerance: tolerating the feeling of being stuck without emergency behaviors.

The In-Session "Coach Rehearsal" (15 Minutes)
Step 1: Read Aloud & Decode
Have the student read each of the 3 cards aloud with assertive vocal tone. Ask: "When you feel like screaming or crying, which card is your biggest shield?"
Step 2: The Whisper Transfer
Practice the statements in a sub-vocal whisper while holding a finger against the card's tactile grounding border.

1. Gamifying Distress Tolerance: Counselor Script
Counselor: "In video games, you don't call an emergency rescue helicopter the second a puzzle gets tricky. If you did, you'd never level up! Instead, you check your inventory, check your quest map, and try a power-up first."
"In 5th grade, your teachers know you are capable of leveling up. From now on, you have The 3-Before-Me Rule . Before you can ask an adult to step in, you must complete 3 quick solo checkpoints. And every period, you get 3 Help Tokens . If you save your tokens by managing frustration on your own, you bank them for awesome rewards at the end of the day!"
2. The 3-Before-Me Independence Steps
1
Look at Visual Directions / Schedule
Reread question heading, look at example problem on the board, check timer or task checklist. Identify specifically which word or step is confusing.
2
Check "What To Do When" Strategy Sheet
Flip to Zone Strategy card: read Brain Coach Card ("I don't need help for 3 minutes..."). Circle or underline the part you can do.
3
Try 1 Coping Strategy for 60 Seconds
Execute 1 physical reset: 4 box breaths OR 20s wrist ice press OR 3 fist clench/releases. Allow nervous system to downshift.

Session 3 Protocol
The Structured 1-Minute Staff Check-In Protocol
When the student trades a token, classroom staff must follow this strict 60-second formula to avoid accidental co-regulation relapses:
1. Verification (10 sec):
"I see your token. Show me your 3-Before-Me checkmarks on your desk mat."
2. Targeted Pinpoint (20 sec):
"Which exact word or step is confusing?" (Do not explain the entire sheet—only clarify the immediate obstacle).
3. Empowerment Exit (30 sec):
"You know how to start step 1 now. I'm taking this token. I'll check back in 10 minutes to see your progress." (Staff walks away immediately).

Session 4: Systematized Independence
Clinical Goal for Classroom Team: Systematically reduce prompt dependency and proximity reliance. Adult verbal soothing is completely phased out and replaced with static physical anchors (TIPP desk strip, Brain Coach cards, and the 3-Before-Me token dock).
The 4-Stage Co-Regulation Fading Ladder
STAGE 1 Counseling Lab Mastery (Weeks 1-2)
Student masters the physical TIPP skills, memorizes the 3 Brain Coach statements, and practices simulated 3-minute delays in the counseling office.
100% Prompted
STAGE 2 Silent Classroom Gesturing (Weeks 3-4)
Staff discontinues verbal comforting. When student shows agitation or calls out, staff member steps up, taps the desk anchor silently, and stands 3-5 feet back.
Gestural Only
STAGE 3 Token Exchange Only (Weeks 5-6)
Staff only approaches the student's desk when a physical token is placed into the launch dock. Interaction is strictly capped at 60 seconds of academic clarification.
Token Gated
STAGE 4 Autonomous Solo Pilot (Week 7+)
Student independently uses physical TIPP tools and brain coach cards. Student banks 2-3 tokens daily and receives positive reinforcement during end-of-day checkout.
Independent
⚠️ Staff Behavioral Traps to Avoid:
Hovering: Standing right behind the student creates unconscious co-regulation reliance. Maintain 5-10 feet of spatial freedom.
Answering Panic Questions: Do not answer "Is this wrong?" Redirect: "Check your Brain Coach Card #2."
Token Forgiveness: Do not grant free check-ins when tokens are depleted; prompt them to use their Box Breath.
