Set 1 of 2 • 4 Activity Cards
Cognitive Reframing CARD #1
🌪️ The "All-or-Nothing" Spiral
The Real Scenario: "I got stuck on the first two math problems. My brain started screaming: 'You're going to fail, ruin your GPA, and look foolish!'"
Group Talk:
- Why do our minds jump straight to the worst-case scenario?
- What is a more realistic fact-check for this student?
Practice the Reframe:
"Getting stuck on two problems means they are hard, not that I am doomed. I will skip them and rack up points on the rest first."
Somatic Calming CARD #2
💓 Racing Pulse & Tight Shoulders
The Real Scenario: "Right as the teacher says 'clear your desks,' my heart pounds in my ears, my hands get clammy, and my neck feels totally stiff."
Group Talk:
- Where in your body do you notice stress showing up first?
- How does calming your body help unlock your memory?
The "4x4 Box Breath" Drill:
Inhale (4s) → Hold (4s) → Exhale slowly (4s) → Rest (4s). Repeat twice to instantly slow heart rate.
Test-Taking Tactic CARD #3
🧠 The 60-Second "Brain Dump"
The Real Scenario: "I memorized formulas, key dates, and vocabulary, but I'm terrified they will evaporate the second I open the test packet."
Group Talk:
- Why is holding too much in working memory exhausting?
- What 3 items would be most useful to write down first?
How to Execute:
As soon as allowed, jot formulas, acronyms, and reminder cues in the margins or on scrap paper. Your brain is now uncluttered!
Grounding Method CARD #4
⚓ The 5-4-3-2-1 Sensory Anchor
The Real Scenario: "During a long science test, my eyes glazed over and I drifted into full daydream-panic mode about failing the 7th grade."
Group Talk:
- How do you pull yourself back when your focus drifts away?
- Try the sensory drill right now together in 30 seconds!
Micro-Grounding Drill:
Notice: 3 things you see (pencil, desk grain), 2 things you feel (feet on floor), 1 sound (clock ticking). You're back!
Group Rule: Listen without judgment, share real experiences, and practice each tool together.

Pacing Strategy CARD #5
⏳ The "Sticky Problem" Time-Trap
The Real Scenario: "I spent 12 whole minutes on Question 4 because I refused to give up. When I looked up, only 8 minutes were left for 15 questions!"
Group Talk:
- Why is it hard to walk away from a question we don't know?
- What is the benefit of doing an 'easy-win pass' first?
The "Two-Pass" Rule:
Pass 1: Answer every question you know confidently. Put a dot next to hard ones. Pass 2: Use remaining time on dotted questions.
Mid-Test Reset CARD #6
🛑 The Mid-Test Brain Fatigue
The Real Scenario: "Halfway through a reading packet, words started blurring together. My brain felt totally fried and I just wanted to randomly guess."
Group Talk:
- Is it a waste of time to pause for 20 seconds during a test?
- What physical release helps you unclamp your brain?
The 20-Second Pencil-Drop:
Set pencil down, drop shoulders away from ears, squeeze fingers tight then release, take one deep sigh. Pick up pencil recharged!
Cognitive Reframing CARD #7
👀 The "Everyone Else is Faster" Trap
The Real Scenario: "Students around me started flipping pages and turning in tests. I felt slow, dumb, and like I was falling way behind."
Group Talk:
- Does finishing first ever equal getting the highest score?
- How can you put on mental 'blinders' to stay in your lane?
Self-Talk Shield:
"Their pace is not my business. There are zero bonus points for speed. My thoughtful pacing gives me accuracy."
Routine & Prep CARD #8
🌅 The "Morning-Of" Game Plan
The Real Scenario: "I woke up late, skipped breakfast, ran into school panicked, and started speed-cramming in the hallway with friends who were freaking out."
Group Talk:
- How does stress 'catch' like a virus from other people?
- What is 1 tiny change to make your test morning peaceful?
The 3-Step Power Morning:
1. Water + Protein before screen time. 2. No panic-talk in the hallways. 3. One power breath at your desk.
Counselor Tip: Have students choose their favorite card to keep in their binder or pencil case as an emergency anchor!
