A Supportive Pathway to High School Graduation and Future Success
Earn a Regular HS Diploma
What is the Missouri Options Program? This state-approved alternative program is designed for students who are at least 17 years old and significantly behind their peer group in school credits. Rather than spending semesters repeating courses, students focus intensely on preparation for the high school equivalency exam (HiSET) while staying fully enrolled, integrated, and actively preparing for employment or post-secondary goals.
Who is Eligible?
- Age Status: Must be at least 17 years old and currently enrolled in high school.
- Credit Deficiency: Student is at least one full academic year behind school cohort in completed credits.
- Course Requirements: Must pass or have completed state-required courses: Health, Government, & Personal Finance.
- Official Referral: Formally recommended by school counseling staff.
The Pathway Steps
- 1 Meeting: Student and guardian meet with the counselor to review credits and program options.
- 2 Assessment: Screen foundational skills to ensure student readiness for exam preparation.
- 3 Agreement: Sign local district agreements committing to core academic and active hours.
Program Requirements
Students must balance academic work with active workforce or community service involvement:
Pillar 1: Academic Preparation
Students attend school daily for specialized, individual or group instruction focused entirely on the high school equivalency curriculum (HiSET) in major subjects.
Pillar 2: Work or Service Activity
Students are required to engage in at least 15 hours of active contribution weekly, which can include job employment, internships, or volunteering.

Same Diploma
Receives a traditional local high school diploma, same as peers.

Walk alongside your graduating class in your school cap and gown.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Is the program "easier" than regular courses?
A: No. While structured differently with custom pacing and small class ratios, passing all subtests of the HiSET and managing the 15-hour weekly job/service requirement demands strong maturity and effort.
Q: Does a MO-Option diploma look different?
A: No. Upon program completion, students receive a standard high school diploma identical to the one awarded to other graduating students in the school district.
