Keeping It Real: School Can Be a Drag
Sitting at a desk for 6 hours, dealing with rules, and doing endless worksheets isn't always fun—and that's totally okay to admit. Your 5th grade mentor isn't a teacher or a judge. They're an older ally sharing real "cheat codes" to cruise through school smoothly, protect your free time, dodge trouble, and make the day suck a whole lot less.

Real Talk & The "Invisibility Cloak"
Date: ______________
Pair: ____________________
Step 1: The Honest Meter (No Sugarcoating)
Mentor asks & listens
Mentor reads each question. Mentee is allowed to be 100% real:
On a scale of 1-10, how much do you dread Monday mornings? Why?
What is the #1 most annoying thing that happens during a school day?
What are 2 things you actually care about outside of school (gaming, sports, drawing)?
What is the one part of the school day that is least painful?
Step 2: The "Invisibility Cloak" (Staying Off Teacher Radar)
Why follow hallway rules? Not to be a teacher's pet—to protect your peace! When you run, push, or yell in hallways, adults stop you, scold you, and watch you all day. Being smooth keeps you free:
Gliding Mode (0-1)
Whisper or silent. Loud voices are like a siren calling teachers over.
Walk Right Side
Hug the right wall. You blend in and nobody bumps into you.
Hands In Pockets
Don't touch walls, doors, or posters. Zero reasons for adults to call your name.
5th Grade Mentor Cheat Code: "Walk like you have an important mission. Adults only stop kids who look bored, slow, or wild."
Step 3: Trap Avoidance (What Would You Do?)
The Situation: You're walking to music and someone behind you kicks the back of your sneaker (flat-tires you) on purpose, laughing with their buddies right near an assistant principal's office door.
How do you react so YOU don't get in trouble or look weak?
Level 1 Mission: Use the "Invisibility Cloak" in the hallway all week—zero teacher callouts!

Boredom Busters & Getting Unstuck
Date: ______________
Pair: ____________________
Step 1: Brain Drain Chat
Mentee shares
Mentor shares how they handle boring classes, then mentee answers:
Which subject makes you want to fall asleep or scream? What makes it so dull?
When work feels way too hard, what do you usually do? (Give up, put head down, scribble, goof off?)
Step 2: Classroom Survival Hacks (Look Good with Low Effort)
When you hate a lesson, putting your head on the desk causes teachers to hover over you and nag you. Use these 3 stealth moves instead:
1. Head Up & Nod
Prop your chin in your hand and nod once every 3 minutes. Teachers assume you're fascinated!
2. Chunk the Page
Fold the worksheet in half so your brain only sees 5 problems instead of 20. It feels 10x faster.
3. The 3-Minute Rescue
If stuck, don't sit in anger. Ask: "Can you help me with step 1?" Teachers love doing step 1 with you.
Mentor Secret: "If you put your head down, teachers stand by your desk for 10 minutes. If you just look at the board, they walk right past you."
Step 3: Trap Avoidance (What Would You Do?)
The Situation: You have to read a giant paragraph and answer questions, but you don't understand the first sentence. You feel furious and want to crumple the paper or put your hood up.
What is the secret move that solves this without getting scolded?
Level 2 Mission: Fold your next big worksheet in half and ask for help on just #1 before quitting.

Defending Recess & Cafeteria Freedom
Date: ______________
Pair: ____________________
Step 1: Free Time Reality Check
Honest Chat
Recess and lunch are the only times you get freedom. Don't lose them:
Have you ever had to sit against the wall or have silent lunch? How bad did it feel?
What game or spot at recess always seems to start arguments with kids?
Step 2: Expectations as Shields (Protecting Your Minutes)
School aides LOVE to take away recess for cafeteria mess and playground yelling. Use these shields:
Cafeteria Radar Shields
- Keep all trash on your tray—don't throw carrots or chips!
- Trading snacks gets tables inspected—keep trades hidden or at home.
- Clean your spot 1 minute before dismissal so you bolt outside fast.
The "Don't Feed Drama" Rule
- Never argue over a foul or out for more than 15 seconds.
- Rock-Paper-Scissors immediately: one round, done.
- If kids are cheating or bossy, walk away and play elsewhere.
Mentor Rule of Recess: "Winning an argument on the playground is NEVER worth spending 15 minutes sitting on the brick wall staring at the dirt. Walk away and keep playing!"
Step 3: Trap Avoidance (What Would You Do?)
The Situation: You're in line for four-square or soccer. Someone cuts in front of you, smirks, and says "I was here first." Other kids are egging you on to push them or scream.
How do you handle this without giving the duty teacher an excuse to bench you?
Level 3 Mission: Use the 15-second rule or RPS if an argument flares up at recess this week.

Dodging Homework & Backpack Traps
Date: ______________
Pair: ____________________
Step 1: The After-School Trap Confessions
Keep it 100
When homework gets forgotten, teachers steal your recess the next day. Let's fix that:
Be honest: Does your backpack contain crumpled papers from 3 months ago? Where do assignments go missing?
What do you normally do when you get home from school? (Snack, video games, collapse?)
Step 2: The "Get It Over With" Homework Cheat Code
Nobody wants to spend their evening doing schoolwork. Use the 5th grade speed method:
The 15-Min Blitz
Do homework before touching video games. Once it's done, your whole night is 100% guilt-free.
Done Pocket Only
Slide finished work directly into the front folder pocket. Never stuff loose sheets in the bottom!
Doorway Launchpad
Zip your bag at night and put it right against the front door. You literally trip over it in the morning.
Teacher Psychology Hack: "If you honestly forgot your homework, tell the teacher at 8:00 AM before class starts. They will usually give you an extension instead of a lecture!"
Step 3: Trap Avoidance (What Would You Do?)
The Situation: You get to school and realize you left your reading packet on your kitchen counter. The teacher usually makes people who forget homework miss recess.
What is the exact diplomatic script you can use to save your recess?
Level 4 Mission: Dump out trash from your backpack right now and try the Doorway Launchpad tonight!

Button-Pushers & Tough Situations
Date: ______________
Pair: ____________________
Step 1: Trigger Radar
Real Talk
When people get under your skin, reacting usually gets YOU in trouble:
What kind of classmate annoys you most? (Bossy kids, loud kids, tattlers?)
How does your body feel right before you snap? (Hot ears, clenched fists, fast heartbeat?)
Step 2: "Don't Take the Bait" (The Ultimate Power Move)
Annoying kids WANT you to yell or shove so the teacher writes YOU up. Here is how you win without taking the bait:
The Blank Stare
Look at them for 3 seconds with zero expression, then turn around. It makes them look silly.
The "Anyway..."
Say "Anyway..." and go back to what you were doing. Total boss move; shuts down teasing.
Tech & Assembly
Don't open unblocked games on Chromebooks—school IT monitors every click. Don't lose tech!
Golden Mentor Rule: "The person who gets mad first is always the person the teacher catches. If you stay completely calm, the instigator gets caught every time."
Step 3: Trap Avoidance (What Would You Do?)
The Situation: You're assigned a partner in science who grabs the materials, tells you "You don't know how to do this," and starts doing it alone. You feel humiliated and angry.
What is a calm, firm move you can make that doesn't cause a scene?
Level 5 Mission: Use "The Blank Stare" or the "Anyway..." move when someone tries to annoy you.
