1
Heart Bridge Demonstration (Hook & Concrete Model)
5 Mins
Purpose: Help first graders physically visualize how words affect relationships using two paper cutouts separated across a gap.
Teacher Dialogue Script:
"Imagine Ava and Leo are standing on opposite sides of a river. When Ava says, 'You're fun to play with!' , she lays a sturdy bridge plank. But if someone yells, 'You can't play!' , a big gray wall pops up!"
Guided Inquiry Questions:
"How does Leo's chest feel when a bridge plank is placed?" (Warm, safe, happy)
"What happens when we build many planks?" (We can walk together and be close friends!)
2
Whole-Body Listening Fishbowl (Explicit Modeling)
7 Mins
Model Protocol: Invite one student volunteer to the center carpet. Demonstrate non-example first (looking at shoes, fidgeting) vs. whole-body active listening.
1. Eyes Looking
Gentle eye gaze on speaker's face
2. Body Calm
Shoulders turned towards partner
3. Ears Ready
Quiet voice, waiting to reply
Gracious Receiving Formula: Teach students the 2-step receiver response: "Smile + 'Thank you, that made my heart feel warm!'" Practice having all students say this in unison while placing a gentle hand on their chest.

Bridge-Builder Role-Play (Pair Practice)
12 Mins
Setup (2 min): Pair students knee-to-knee using color-matched Bridge-Builder Script Cards. Partner A is Builder (Speaker), Partner B is Receiver (Active Listener).
Sentence Frame Repertoire (Practiced with visual prompt cards):
Option 1 (Effort & Helpfulness): "I like how you shared your crayons today."
Option 2 (Friendship & Joy): "You are really good at playing tag!"
Switch at 6 minutes: Ring chime. Partner B becomes Builder; Partner A practices Whole-Body Listening. Teacher circulates with prompt stamps / verbal affirmations.
4
Closing Appreciation Circle (Somatic Reflection)
6 Mins
Somatic Check-In:
Have students place hands on hearts. Ask: "Did your chest feel warm or cold when your partner shared kind words?" Validate the biological sensation of safety and connection.
Bridge Builder Pledge:
"My eyes are kind, my ears are wide, I build strong bridges side-by-side!"
Differentiation & Accommodations
Multilingual Learners: Use visual icon sentence strips with photo cards (smile, helping hand, blocks). Allow echoing after teacher prompt.
Sensory / Movement Needs: Provide wiggle seats; allow active listening with relaxed gaze rather than forced direct eye contact.
Extension: Encourage pairs to give a multi-sentence compliment naming *why* they appreciated the action.
Observational Checklist
Turns torso toward speaker without wandering body Maintains quiet mouth while partner is sharing frame Delivers sincere sentence frame with friendly tone Responds with "Thank you" and warm body language

Words that Build Bridges!
Kind Words & Whole-Body Active Listening
Today's Goal: Give warm compliments & listen with your whole body!
Slide 1
What Does a Bridge Do?
A bridge connects two friends across a river!
Bridge Words
Kind words bring friends together. They make everyone feel welcome, safe, and happy!
Wall Words
Mean or ignoring words build heavy walls. Walls push friends apart and make hearts feel lonely.
We are Builders! We choose to build BRIDGES!
Whole-Body Active Listening
Use all three listening cues to show you care!
1. EYES LOOKING
Gentle, friendly eyes looking right at the speaker!
2. BODY CALM
Still hands and calm body turned toward our friend!
3. EARS READY
Quiet mouth, ready to hear every word with our heart!
Check yourself: Are your eyes, body, and ears ready?
