Quick Preparation Checklist
Ensure the Upstander Academy Slides are projected. Pre-cut or prepare scissors for the Upstander Shield Craft. Organize tape/strips for wearing the badges.
Big Idea
An upstander is a superhero who uses kind words and helpful actions to make sure everyone is safe and included.
K-1 Objective
Students will identify kind vs. unkind scenarios and physically practice the 3 Stoplight System moves.

Welcome & Warm-Up (Slide 1)
Introduce the idea of "Upstander Academy." Spark high energy with a superhero warm-up.
Movement Prompt: Strike a bold superhero pose and hold for 10 seconds!
5-10 Min
Bystander vs. Upstander (Slide 2)
Define both concepts simply. Use the contrast block for side-by-side reading.
Movement Prompt: Quick Jump Test. Stand immediately if the action is helpful!

Stop, Support, Report (Slide 3)
Teach the Stoplight System: 1. Stop (Red), 2. Support (Yellow), 3. Report (Green).
Movement Prompt: Practice shouting "Stop!" then making a heart shape for Support, then marching for Report.
15-20 Min
Superhero Training (Slide 4 & 5)
Read aloud scenarios and have kids react using their roleplay poses. Then dismiss to tables.
Movement Prompt: Strike an "Upstander Shield Pose" to protect others!
Scenario Scripts (To Read Aloud)
Scenario A (Bystander or Upstander?):
"Sam is trying to build a blocks tower. Leo comes and knocks it down on purpose! Sam starts crying. Emma sees this, walks over, and hands Sam a block saying, 'Let's build it together.' Emma is an..." (Children shout "UPSTANDER!" and jump up!)
Scenario B (Stop, Support, Report in Action):
"At recess, Mia is sitting on the bench looking sad. Two children tell her she can't play tag with them. How can we be Upstanders?" (Ask students to show Support: Stand next to Mia, offer to play together, and walk away from the bullies!)
Craft Wrap-Up & Circle Debrief
As students cut and color their Upstander Shields, ask: "Who will you protect today with your kindness shield?" Connect this home by prompting them to tell their families about their superhero code.
