The Red, Yellow, Green Story
Have students sit in a circle. Ask: "How do we know when a car needs to stop?" Connect traffic stoplights to our bodies. Explain that our bodies also have physical signals like engines that go too fast (Red), medium and wiggly (Yellow), or smooth and focused (Green).
10-25m Teach
Mapping the Body Stoplight
Use the Stoplight Calm Slide Deck to introduce the three energy zones:
RED ZONE Angry, tense, overly hyper. Needs a "Slam-and-Release" stop strategy.
YELLOW ZONE Wiggly, silly, or distracted. Needs a slow breath or squeeze break.
GREEN ZONE Calm, ready, or ready to learn. Best zone for work and play.

Classroom Setup
25-35m Activity
Visual Cards Craft & Strategy Check
Distribute the Stoplight Calm Activity Cards to students. Instruct them to color and write their names on their indicator flags. Teachers or aids cut out the matching coping badges for students.
Action Steps:
Guide kids in identifying a strategy for each zone that works best for them.
Mount Velcro dots to the back of the coping badges.
Let each child paste their strategy badge to their desk stoplight, or onto the communal Calming Corner board.
35-45m Wrap
Stoplight Cool Down & Exit reflection
Gather students together and let them fill out the Stoplight Calm Reflection Sheet . Check if they can successfully identify how they are feeling right now and select which breathing pattern or strategy matches their current stoplight color.
Calming Corner Setup Guide
The Calming Corner stoplight system is most effective when mirrored inside a physically cozy space in your classroom. Follow this visual configuration:
Red Zone Station
Equip with safe physical release tools like a soft squeeze ball, a push-against-wall space, or a "deep sighs" visual cards folder.
Yellow Zone Station
Equip with gentle fidgets, visual liquid timers, trace-the-spiral deep breathing visual sheets, or tracing cards.
Tip for Success: Introduce the stoplight system when students are already in the Green Zone (focused and peaceful). Avoid introducing the Calming Corner while a child is in the midst of a major meltdown, as their cognitive capacity to process new structures is temporarily limited.

Checking Our Body Engine
Let's learn how to use the Calming Corner Stoplight to understand our feelings and find our way to calm!
Unit 1: Self-Regulation Essentials Slide 1 of 6
The Body Engine
How do we feel inside?
Just like cars, our bodies have different speeds. Sometimes we run extra fast, sometimes we get wiggly, and sometimes we are calm and parked!
The Stoplight helps us show our friends and teachers what speed our body engine is running.
Understand Your Signal Slide 2 of 6
Stoplight Signals
RED ZONE
Very High Speed
When our body feels RED:
Our hearts might beat super fast. We might feel angry, very frustrated, or overly excited . It feels hard to stay still or listen!
Red Calming Strategy:
Squeeze & Release: Squeeze your fists as hard as you can like a turtle in a shell, hold for 3 seconds, then release them wide. Do this 3 times!

YELLOW ZONE
Medium Speed
When our body feels YELLOW:
We feel wiggly, silly, or minorly frustrated . We can walk, but our mind is drifting off or we feel slightly out of focus.
Yellow Calming Strategy:
The Butterfly Hug: Cross your hands over your chest. Alternate tapping your shoulders gently like butterfly wings while taking 3 deep, slow breaths.

GREEN ZONE
Optimal/Focused Speed
When our body feels GREEN:
We are feeling calm, ready, and happy . Our body engines are humming perfectly. This is when learning and working are most fun!
Green Mode:
We want to stay right here! Keep learning, listen to others, and use gentle, friendly words with everyone around us.
