Cozy Burrow Counselor Guide
Facilitation Plan & Clinical Support for New Student Integration
The Cozy
Burrow
Target Audience
Shy, quiet, or anxious female elementary students starting at a new school.
Theme Motif
The Cozy Burrow: Warm woodland creatures, safety, soft sensory elements.
Session Goals
Build alliance, mapping worries, identifying safe spaces, soft peer entry skills.
Clinical Intent & Safe-Space Framing
Quiet or anxious students often feel overwhelmed by direct, high-pacing social questioning. Using a woodland metaphor (The Cozy Burrow) externalizes anxiety. It allows the student to project their feelings onto safe animal characters (e.g., the shy bunny, the quiet squirrel) while identifying their physical sensory safety cues. Maintain a soft, gentle vocal tone and offer low-stimulation seating (soft cushions, beanbags) during this session.
Facilitation Phases
1
Warm Burrow Welcome & Icebreaker (10 Minutes)
Introduce yourself and your workspace as a "Cozy Burrow" – a place where students can rest and play when school feels big and busy. Introduce the Burrow Buddies Connection Cards . Rather than direct interviewing, shuffle the cards and take turns drawing cards. This model of vulnerability from you helps lower her social defenses.
Counselor Prompt: "In my office, we are like little animals resting in a safe burrow. Let's play a drawing game to get to know each other."
2
My Cozy Spot & Safety Mapping (15 Minutes)
Open the Cozy Burrow Adventure Booklet to Page 1. Help the student design her imaginary safe burrow. Move to Page 2 ("My Safety Den") to translate this into the school setting. Identify physical safe zones in the school (e.g., the library, counseling office, classroom reading nook) and safe helpers (teachers, office staff, counselors).

Friendship Gathering & Scripting (15 Minutes)
Transition to Page 3 of the Adventure Booklet ("Gathering Acorns" and "Snail Mail"). Discuss gentle, low-threat social strategies. Roleplay simple scripts for starting a conversation (using soft questions like "I like your lunchbox") and walking up to groups. Emphasize that she does not need to be loud or performative; quiet presence is valuable and welcome.
4
Coping Connection & Take-Home Wrap-up (5 Minutes)
Introduce the Cozy Burrow Coping Sheet . Teach the student the "3-2-1 Burrow Breath" strategy. Encourage her to color this in your office or take it home to keep in her bedroom or backpack as a comforting visual anchor. Schedule a follow-up 5-minute hallway check-in for later in the week.
Observation Checklist & Clinical Notes
Use these gentle prompts to monitor the student's comfort level and socio-emotional readiness:
Physical Comfort: Relaxed shoulders, decreases nervous fidgeting, open posture over the session.
Vocal Quality: Speaks at an audible volume, shifts from monosyllabic responses to short phrases.
Receptive Connection: Makes comfortable brief eye contact, smiles back at the counselor.
Social Agency: Shows interest in starting a conversation or using safe-school zone maps.

Burrow Buddy Friend Finder
How quiet animals gather acorns and make gentle friends without being loud.
🌰 Step 1: Gathering Acorns (Watching & Listening)
Just like a little squirrel watches where the best acorns are before gathering them, we can watch and listen to find the right buddies. Who at school looks like they might have similar interests as you?
I noticed someone who:
...has a cool lunchbox / drawing on their page.
...was playing with blocks / swinging quietly too.
🐌 Step 2: Snail Mail (Gentle Conversation Starters)
Snails move slowly and leave gentle trails. We can use soft "Snail Mail" messages to start talking with new classmates. You don't have to say a lot! Try practicing or filling in these scripts:
Burrow Buddies Connection Cards Burrow Buddies Connection Cards
Print-and-cut conversation cards to build soft trust and gentle connections.
Cut-Outs
How to Play:
Cut along the dashed lines to separate the cards. Shuffle them and take turns drawing cards together with the student. These gentle, indirect questions foster a sense of security and safety, helping the student share comfortably without pressure.
