Master 50/30/20 budgeting rule.
Materials
Slides, Worksheets, Scenario Cards.

● Why is a budget an essential blueprint for achieving long-term life goals?
● How can unexpected "life events" disrupt a financial plan, and how do we prepare?
Key Concepts
Income vs. Expenses
Gross vs. Net pay basics.
50/30/20 Rule
Needs, Wants, and Savings.
Emergency Funds
Planning for the unexpected.
Financial Agency
Informed decision making.
Lesson Procedure
10 min
Introduction: The Hook
Ask students: "If I gave you $1,000 today, what would you do with it?" Use this to transition into the reality of taxes, rent, and necessities. Introduce the concept of a financial "blueprint."
15 min
Direct Instruction
Use the Financial Blueprint Slides to define key terms: Gross Income, Net Pay, Fixed vs. Variable Expenses, and the 50/30/20 Budgeting framework.
25 min
Guided Practice: Building the Budget
Hand out the Budget Blueprint Worksheet . Assign students one of the four personas provided in the Life Happens Scenarios . Students will:
Calculate their Net Monthly Income.
Allocate funds for "Needs" (Rent, Utilities, Food).
Allocate "Savings" (aiming for 20%).
Distribute remaining funds to "Wants".
20 min
Game: Fortune Founder
Divide students into small groups. Play the Fortune Founder Game . Students draw "Life Event Cards" that impact their budgets (e.g., car repairs, winning a small contest, rising utility costs). They must adjust their budgets accordingly.
10 min
Conclusion & Reflection
Debrief the activity. Ask: "What was the hardest part about balancing your budget after a life event?" and "Which category (Needs, Wants, Savings) did you find hardest to compromise on?"
Facilitator Tips
Reality Check
Many students won't realize how much taxes take. Use a simple "20% estimate" for net income to keep the math easy but realistic.
Differentiation
For younger students, provide pre-filled amounts for "Needs." For older students, have them research local rent or grocery prices.
Success Criteria
Students can successfully categorize expenses as needs, wants, or savings.
Students can adjust a budget to accommodate an unexpected $500 expense.
Students understand the impact of "lifestyle creep" on long-term savings.
