Target Grades
5th - 6th Grade
Objective
Students will rewrite texts to convey different tones and analyze how perspective affects interpretation.
Pacing
45-50 Minutes total. 5 min warm-up, 10 min video, 25 min activity, 10 min wrap-up.
Materials
Slide Deck, Tone Tweakers Worksheet, YouTube Link (embedded in slides).
1. Warm-Up (5 Min)
Prompt: "I can't go."
Ask students: "How does the meaning change when you say it angrily vs. sadly?"
Key Point: In person, our voice (inflection) does the work. In text, our words and punctuation must do that work for us.
2. Video Analysis (10 Min)
Pause at 1:25: Liz vs. Kim
Liz: Uses exclamation points and persuasive words ("fun," "everyone's going"). Her tone is carefree.
Kim: Uses short, declarative sentences with no emojis. Her tone is blunt.
Pause at 4:05: The Reveal
"How does knowing about Kim's brother change things?"
Key Concept: Context. Kim wasn't being mean; she was overwhelmed. Her perspective made her texts seem cold even if that wasn't her intention.
3. Tone Tweakers Activity (20-25 Min)
Students work independently on the grid first, then move to the partner challenge.
What to Look For
• Use of ALL CAPS for anger.
• Multiple exclamation points for excitement.
• Question marks or "..." for worry.
• Specific word choice changes (e.g., "Where are you?!" vs. "I hope you are okay!").
Differentiation
• Support: Provide a list of emojis for each tone category.
• Challenge: Ask students to write a message where the tone contradicts the words (sarcasm).
