1. Mindful Warm-Up: Deep Roots Breathing
0 - 5 Minutes
Begin with students seated at their desks. Guide them through a sensory mindfulness activity to ground them and introduce the tree metaphor.
Facilitation: "Close your eyes or look at the floor. Imagine your feet are roots growing deep down into the soil. Let's take three slow, deep 'root breaths' together. Inhale to pull energy up from the roots, and exhale to steady your trunk. As we breathe, think: What keeps a tree tall and strong through windy weather?"
2. Interactive Story: The Great Oak Story
5 - 15 Minutes
Read from the Narrated Tree Story Script. Project the corresponding story slide.
Key Teaching Concept: Trust is like the root system of a tree. It is invisible underground, but without it, the branches and leaves above (our friendships and learning) will fall when a windstorm comes. Honesty and reliability are the water that feed the roots.

3. Leaf Pledge Craft & Action-Plan
15 - 25 Minutes
Distribute the Leaf Pledge Craft. Direct students to choose two actions: one for Honesty and one for Reliability.
Guiding Instructions: Model how to fill out the pledge leaves first. For example, "I will tell the truth even when it's hard" or "I will help clean up when I promise to." Students write, color, and cut out their leaves to be hung on a physical classroom "Trust Tree" bulletin board.
4. Group Sharing & Closing Circle
25 - 30 Minutes
Students sit in a circle holding their finished pledge leaves. Prompt them to share how they will put their leaves to work.
Active Pledge: "Hold your leaf high! Let's pledge together: 'We are honest. We are helpful. We build trust in this room!' Go around and let each student share one word from their leaves."

Proficient: Clearly defines trust in own words; lists 2 realistic classroom actions.Developing: Needs support defining trust; names 1 basic action.
Adaptation Guide
Support: Provide a word-bank card with words like "truth, share, help, return, listen." Allow dictation or drawing.
Challenge: Have students write a "shadow side" sentence explaining what happens to a tree branch if that trust is broken.
Classroom Management Tip
Create a blank "Trust Tree" trunk out of brown bulletin board paper on your wall before the lesson. As students complete their pledges during the lesson, have them tape or pin their leaves to the branches immediately. This provides instant, tangible reinforcement of community-building.

Once upon a time, at the very top of a windy hill, lived a grand pine tree named Verda. Verda was the tallest tree in the entire valley. Her emerald-green needles shone in the warm morning sun, and her thick branches offered cool shade to passing rabbits and singing chickadees.
[Stretch your arms wide to simulate grand branches, smiling at the students.]
From the outside, Verda looked perfectly strong. But Verda had a deep secret. Her strength didn’t actually come from her grand branches, or even her beautiful green needles. Her true secret lived underground, completely hidden from sight: it was her root system.
Her roots were thick, tough, and wrapped tight around the deep forest stones. Whenever Verda made an honest choice—like helping a neighbor tree share the spring water—her roots grew an inch thicker. Whenever Verda kept a promise, her roots dug an inch deeper. This deep underground grip was called Trust.
[Point down to the floor under your feet, modeling the idea of strong roots.]

"Why do you think Verda's roots are hidden? In our classroom, can we 'see' trust with our eyes, or do we see it in other ways?"
One day, a huge summer storm rolled over the hill. The wind howled—Whoosh! Whoosh!—and dark gray clouds threw lightning across the sky. Other younger trees on the hillside shook with fear. They screamed, "We don't have deep roots yet! The wind is going to blow us over!"
Verda called out to them, "Reach your branches out and hold onto mine! My roots are deep, and I will keep us safe!" The younger trees reached out, holding Verda's strong branches. Because Verda’s underground root system of trust was so incredibly deep and solid, she didn't budge. She kept every single tree safe through the entire storm.
Final Story Discussion:
"Because Verda kept her promises (reliability) and spoke the truth (honesty), she had the strength to help her community. How can we be like Verda in our classroom when things get tough or stormy?"
