Peaceful Choices Teacher Guide
Elementary SEL & Behavior Intervention Duration: 30 Minutes
Peaceful Choices Teacher Guide
Addressing Weapon Gestures, Threatening Words, and Real-World Impact
Developmental Context & Tone Guidance
Elementary students frequently mimic video games, movies, or peer culture using hand gestures (e.g., finger guns) or aggressive phrases ("I'll shoot you"). While their intent is often playful or dramatic, the impact in a school environment creates genuine fear, disrupts emotional safety, and triggers mandatory safety protocols. Approach this lesson with firm boundaries, high empathy, and no humiliation.
Identify Behaviors
Clearly define weapon gestures (finger guns, aiming, throat-slits) and threatening statements.
Intent vs. Impact
Understand why saying "it was just a joke" does not erase fear or safety consequences.
Consequences
Examine disciplinary outcomes: loss of privileges, admin intervention, safety assessments, parent contact.
Pacing & Step-by-Step Lesson Architecture
00–05 min
Opening: Setting Safe Community Norms
Slides 1 & 2
Establish the classroom as a safe zone. Frame the conversation around physical and emotional comfort rather than punishment.
05–12 min
Direct Instruction: What Gestures & Words Do
Slides 3 & 4
Explicitly label gestures (pointing fingers like guns, reloading motions) and phrases ("I'm gonna shoot you"). Teach the brain's alarm system.
12–19 min
The Ripple Effect & School Consequences
Slide 5
Analyze three levels of harm: 1) Classmate fear, 2) Classroom disruption, 3) Real administrative consequences (investigations, parent phone calls).
19–26 min
Guided Scenario Practice & Student Reflection
Worksheet Page 1-2
Distribute student sheets. Students analyze realistic peer scenarios, identify consequences, and practice replacement behaviors.
26–30 min
Closing Commitment & Classroom Safety Pledge
Slide 8 / Pledge
Sign individual commitments. Review the replacement gestures (thumbs up, peace sign, open palms) and affirm classroom safety.

Hook & Framing (Minute 02):
"Welcome everyone. Today we are talking about keeping our classroom feeling 100% safe for every single brain and body in this room. Sometimes people see gestures or hear words in video games or online and think, 'I'm just playing.' But school is not a video game. In real life, gestures that represent weapons make people's alarm bells ring. Today we will learn why our words and hands must always be safe."
Teaching Intent vs. Impact (Minute 08):
"If I accidentally step on your toe while walking backwards, did I mean to hurt you? No. But does your toe still hurt? Yes! Words and hand gestures work the exact same way. Even if you meant it as a joke, the person seeing your hand shaped like a weapon feels fear and tension. Intent is what you meant; impact is what actually happened. In school, we are responsible for our impact."
Explaining Consequences (Minute 15):
"When someone uses weapon gestures or says words like 'I'm gonna shoot you' or 'I have a gun,' teachers and principals cannot guess if you are joking. We are legally and ethically required to protect everyone. That means immediate office visits, safety screenings, calls home to your family, and loss of fun school activities. It changes how people trust you. It is never worth the risk."
Handling Common Student Excuses (Rapid De-escalation)
"I was just playing Fortnite / games!"
Teacher Response: "Video games stay on screens. Our school is a real place with real people. Weapons and violent gestures do not belong in school, period."
"My friend knew I didn't mean it!"
Teacher Response: "Other classmates and adults don't know your inside jokes. When anyone sees a weapon gesture, it creates alarm for everyone in the hallway."
"I was just mad and let it slip out!"
Teacher Response: "It is okay to feel angry, but it is never okay to use threatening words or gestures. Let's practice words that express anger safely."
"It's just my fingers, not a real gun!"
Teacher Response: "Hand shapes copy real danger. Our brains respond to that danger signal instantly. We keep our hands calm and respectful at all times."
Classroom Protocol: When a Gesture or Word Occurs
1 Halt & Address
Never ignore it or laugh it off. Address immediately in a calm, firm, neutral tone.
2 Separate & Check
Check in on nearby peers who witnessed it. Reassure them that the classroom is secure.
3 Document & Report
Follow campus safety protocols. Notify administration and school counselor promptly.
4 Restorative Reset
Guide student through the repair process: acknowledgment of impact, apology, and pledge.

Our Safe School Community
Safe Hands,
Safe Words.
Understanding how weapon gestures and aggressive statements affect our friends, our classroom, and ourselves.
A 30-Minute Safety & Respect Conversation
Care • Respect • Responsibility
Step 1: Being Clear
What Are We Talking About?
Weapon Gestures
Making shapes or motions with your hands or body that look like violence:
- • Pointing fingers shaped like a gun
- • Pretending to aim, reload, or fire
- • Slicing gestures across the neck
Threatening Words
Using spoken phrases that talk about weapons, shooting, or hurting:
- • "I'm gonna blast you!"
- • "Watch out or I'll shoot!"
- • Talking about bringing weapons to school
At school, these gestures and words are never allowed, even during games or recess.
Step 2: Understanding People
"But I Was Just Joking!"
INTENT
What was going on inside your own head:
"I was just copying a video game. I didn't actually mean to hurt anybody."
IMPACT
What happened to the person in front of you:
Their brain's alarm bell went off. They felt scared, unsafe, and uncomfortable.
Golden Rule: We cannot control what you meant. We are responsible for what people feel!
Step 3: Cause and Effect
The Ripple Effect
1
Impact on Others
Classmates wonder: "Am I in danger?" They lose trust and don't feel safe playing or working together.
2
Impact on School
Learning stops immediately. Teachers and counselors must stop everything to check if everyone is safe.
3
Impact on YOU
People remember violent words. Friends pull away, adults monitor you closely, and privileges disappear.
Like dropping a rock in water, one gesture creates waves that reach everybody in the building.
Step 4: Real Choices, Real Results
What Really Happens?
Immediate Family Contact
Your parents or guardians will receive a call from the principal explaining what gestures or words occurred.
Official Safety Screening
School administrators must investigate to make sure there are no real weapons or safety threats.
Loss of Fun Privileges

Action or Statement
Safe Choice
Unsafe Choice
Giving a high-five or a thumbs-up to a classmate
Pointing fingers like a gun and clicking your tongue
Saying "I'm gonna blast you!" when someone beats your score
Saying "I feel really frustrated right now; I need space"
Making a slicing motion across your neck during a disagreement

Case Study: Intent vs. Impact
Read the situation:
During tag at recess, Eli tags Jordan out. Jordan gets annoyed, points his finger shaped like a pistol right at Eli's face, and yells, "You're dead!" When the supervisor stops Jordan, Jordan says, "I didn't do anything wrong! It was just a joke from a game I play!"
A. What was Jordan's intent? (What was he thinking inside his own head?)
B. What was the impact on Eli and the other students who saw it? (How did it make them feel?)
C. Why does saying "I was just playing" not fix the problem?
