Soccer Captain Counselor Guide Soccer Captain Counselor Guide
Tier 2 / Tier 3 Brief Counseling Protocol • Grade 3 Focus
25–30 Min Session
Core Competencies
Impulse Inhibition (Cleat Control), Cognitive Perspective-Taking (Field Vision), Restorative Ownership (Fair Play).
Target Outcomes
Student stops reactive fouls, recognizes peer/referee perspectives, and uses the 4-step Fair Play apology.
Materials Needed
Soccer Captain Playbook Activity, Desk Ref Cards, 1 small soft foam soccer ball for tactile trapping.
1
Phase 1: Hook & The Team Captain Metaphor (5 Mins)
Counselor Script: "Imagine the World Cup final. A striker gets bumped by a defender. If he jumps up, screams at the referee, and shoves the defender, what happens? Red card—he gets sent off, and his team suffers. But a true Team Captain doesn't react with wild kicks. He traps the ball, looks around the whole pitch, and plays with self-control. Today, you are earning your Captain's Armband."
Captain's Rule: Wild kicking & blaming = Red Card Bench. Trapping the ball & owning the play = Champion Captain.
2
Phase 2: The 3 Captain Plays (8 Mins)
1. TRAP THE BALL
Impulse Brake (Yellow Card Pause)
Put an invisible foot on the ball. Take 3 deep referee whistle breaths before words, hands, or cleats strike out.
2. SCAN THE PITCH
Perspective Taking (Field Vision)
Look through the other player's eyes. Was it an accident? Are they hurt? How does the referee or teacher see this?
3. CALL THE FOUL
Ownership & Restorative Reset
If you made a bad tackle, raise your hand, offer a sporting hand up, apologize sincerely, and reset the play cleanly.
3
Phase 3: Coaching Defense Traps & Excuses (12 Mins)
When third graders make reactive fouls, they often throw up two defensive excuses. Use these soccer coaching pivots:
Excuse: "He Pushed Me First!"
Counselor Pivot: "He may have made a messy tackle, but who controls your cleats and voice? You do! If you retaliate, the referee flags your foul. Captains keep their cool."
Excuse: "It Was Just an Accident!"
Counselor Pivot: "Even if your cleat accidentally tripped him, he still hit the turf and scraped his knee. Great players don't walk away; they help him up and check on him."

4
Sportsman Fix
"Let me help you up and pass you the restart throw."
Three Role-Play Scenarios for Counselor-Led Coaching
Match 1 Recess Soccer Disputed Goal Trigger: Opponent says "No goal, it was wide!"
The Impulse Move: Student kicks the ball over the fence, gets in the goalie's face, and yells "You guys are liars and cheaters!"
Field Vision Question:
"What did the goalie feel when you charged at him? Will either team want to play with you tomorrow?"
Captain's Repair:
"Retrieve the ball: 'I got angry because I wanted the score. Let's do a goalie restart or coin toss.'"
Match 2 Accidental Hallway Bump Coming in from PE Trigger: Classmate accidentally steps on his heel
The Impulse Move: Instantly wheels around, delivers a hard two-handed chest shove, yelling "Learn how to walk!"
Field Vision Question:
"Was he trying to trip you, or was the line bottlenecked? How does the teacher at the door view your shove?"
Captain's Repair:
"Step back: 'My hands reacted before I trapped the ball. I shouldn't have shoved you.'"
Match 3 Classroom Math Frustration (Redirection by Teacher) Trigger: Teacher tells him to redo an incorrect problem
The Impulse Move: Slams pencil on the desk, crosses arms, mutters "This is unfair, she always targets me."
Field Vision Question:
"Is the teacher targeting you, or coaching you so you learn? What happens to your focus when you sulk?"
Captain's Repair:
"Trap the frustration: 'I felt embarrassed getting it wrong. Coach, could you show me step 2 again?'"
Session Closing & Captain's Handshake (Final 3 Mins)
1. Physical Anchor: Have the student practice tapping his foot down to "trap the ball" when feeling heated.
2. Recess Coach Connection: Inform the duty teacher/aide of the "Trap & Scan" cue so they can give a quick verbal reminder if needed.

The best soccer players in the world don't just have fast feet—they have calm minds . When big feelings flare up on the field or in class, don't kick wildly into a red card. Use your 3 Team Captain power moves!
Move 1: TRAP THE BALL
Freeze Your Cleats!
Put your foot on the ball. Take 3 deep referee breaths before your feet, hands, or mouth kick out in anger.
"Stop, Breathe, Trap!"
Move 2: SCAN THE FIELD
Perspective Vision
Look across the whole pitch. How does the other player feel? Did they mean to bump you? What does the coach see?
"See Through Their Cleats"
Move 3: CALL THE FOUL
Own It & Fix It
No blaming the referee or other players! A true captain admits the bad move, apologizes, and helps restart the match.
"My Foul. Let's Make It Right."
⚽
MATCH DRILL: The Recess Collision
Match Incident: You are dribbling toward the goal at recess. A defender rushes in, trips over your foot, and you both crash onto the grass. Your impulse engine wants to jump up, kick the ball away, and shout: "You tripped me on purpose, you're the worst player ever!"
1. Scan the Field: How does the other player feel right now on the ground? Did they trip you on purpose?
2. Trap the Ball: What can you do with your body for 3 seconds instead of yelling and kicking?
3. Own the Play: If you already yelled at him, what should you say and do right now to make it right?

Before your cleats or voice kick out, scan the pitch with these 3 questions:
1. What does their face show? Are they hurt, scared, or surprised?
2. Was it an accident? Most collisions in soccer are accidental!
3. If I yell, do I get a red card? Retaliation gets you benched every time.

How to Play: The counselor acts as the opposing player or referee. The student practices: 1) Trapping the impulse, 2) Scanning their feelings, and 3) Using the Fair Play repair move.
Card 1
The Disputed Out-of-Bounds Call
Recess Soccer Match
The Spark: You kick the ball toward the net. Classmate yells, "Out! Ball went over the line, our throw-in!" Your impulse wants to kick the ball into the woods, get in his face, and scream: "You're a liar! You cheat every single day!"
Trap the Ball
Foot down on the grass. 3-second referee whistle breath. Keep cleats planted.
Scan the Field
"From his angle, did it look out? If I scream, does everyone stop playing?"
Captain's Move
Say: "I thought it was in, but let's do rock-paper-scissors or your throw so we can keep playing."
Card 2
The Missed Goal & Teammate Blame
PE Class Scrimmage
The Spark: You cross a pass to your teammate in front of the net, but he kicks it wide. Your team loses the drill. Your impulse wants to point right at him and yell: "You lost us the whole game, you're the worst player on this squad!"
Trap the Ball
Bite your tongue. Hands on your hips, inhale slow for 3 counts. No finger pointing.
Scan the Field
"He already feels terrible about missing. How does my yelling make him play next time?"
Captain's Move
High five him: "Good try! We'll get the next one together. I should have passed it softer."
Card 3
The Hard Collision & Tripping Foul
Recess Turf Field
The Spark: You sprint for a breakaway and slide to knock the ball away, but you accidentally take out a defender's legs. He falls and skins his knee. Your impulse says: "He got in my way! It's his fault for running slow!"
Trap the Ball
Freeze immediately. Don't run off to score. Stop and face the fallen player.
Scan the Field
"He is in real pain. Even if it was an accident, my cleats caused the crash."
Captain's Move
Extend hand: "That was my foul. Are you okay? Let me help you up and walk to the nurse if needed."

School Counseling Home Connection • Grade 3
Home Playbook
Dear Family,
Today in our counseling session, your student participated in our "Soccer Captain Training" program! We are using an exciting soccer framework to build essential 3rd-grade leadership skills: pausing before acting on impulse , seeing situations from others' perspectives , and taking genuine ownership when poor choices happen . We want to share these tools so you can use the exact same language at home!
The 3 Captain Moves We Practiced Today
⚽
1. "Trap the Ball" (Impulse Control)
When big feelings flare up (frustration, losing a game, or getting redirected), your child learned to put an invisible "foot on the ball" and take 3 deep referee breaths before hands, cleats, or words react.
Home Prompt: "Whoa, let's trap the ball right now. Take 3 deep breaths with me."
👁
2. "Scan the Field" (Perspective-Taking)
Third graders often react before understanding the situation. We practiced "field vision"—looking at siblings, classmates, or parents to ask: "Did they do that on purpose? How did my reaction make them feel?"
Home Prompt: "Scan the field: how do you think your brother/sister felt when that happened?"
🤝
3. "Call the Foul & Fair Play Reset" (Ownership & Repair)
When a mistake occurs, our focus is eliminating excuses like "He started it!" or "It was an accident!" A true captain raises his hand, admits the mistake, offers a sincere apology, and actively fixes it.
Home Prompt: "No red card excuses. What was your foul, and how can you help fix it?"
3 Ways You Can Reinforce This at Home This Week
Celebrate the "Trap": Praise him whenever he catches himself pausing before reacting: "Awesome job trapping that ball before shouting!"
Praise Clean Ownership: If he owns up to a spilled drink or a broken rule without arguing, commend his integrity right away.
Ask to See His Pocket Cards: Your child has a 4-card pocket deck with his weekly tracker. Ask him to teach you his favorite move!
