Why This Matters
Learning respectful behavior is crucial for positive social interactions, building strong relationships, and creating a safe and inclusive environment. This lesson provides targeted support for students who may struggle with "egregious disrespect," helping them re-center on positive community norms and actionable tools for communication.
Lesson Sequence
5 MIN
1. Warm-Up: What is Respect?
Begin by asking: "When someone is respectful, what does it look like? What does it sound like?" Use Slides 1-2 to guide the discussion. Brainstorm and record ideas on the board.
8 MIN
2. Impact of Disrespect
Discuss the opposite. Ask: "What does disrespect look/sound like? How does it make others feel?" (Slides 3-6). Emphasize that actions have consequences and can hurt feelings. Identify feelings associated with these actions.
12 MIN
3. Respectful Choices Activity
Use the Activity Cards . For each card, discuss: 1. The disrespectful choice, 2. The respectful choice, 3. The positive outcome. (Slides 7-8). Role-play the respectful choices.
5 MIN
4. Respect Reflection
Distribute the Exit Ticket . Students complete prompts individually. Briefly share reflections, reinforcing the key takeaway: Choosing respect is a superpower.

PART 1
Introduction & Brainstorming
Teacher Says:
"Hello everyone! I'm so glad you're here today. We're going to talk about something super important that helps all of us get along and feel good at school. We're going to talk about respect ."
"Does anyone know what respect means? When someone is respectful, what does it look like? What does it sound like? Turn to a partner and share your ideas for about 30 seconds."
(Allow students to discuss. Bring them back together and refer to Slide 2 .)
"Great ideas! Let's hear some of them. (Call on a few students to share.) Wonderful! On our slides, we have some ideas too. Respect looks like listening when others speak, taking turns, and using kind hands and feet. It sounds like using a kind voice, saying 'please' and 'thank you,' and asking before you take something. It's about treating everyone with care and kindness."
PART 2
Impact of Disrespect
Teacher Says:
"Now, let's think about the opposite. What does it look like and sound like when someone is disrespectful ? How does it make you or others feel when someone is disrespectful?"
(Allow students to share. Validate their feelings. Refer to Slides 3 & 4 .)
"That's right. Disrespect can look like interrupting, making fun of someone, or not sharing. It can sound like mean words or yelling. And how does that make people feel? (Pause) It makes us feel sad, angry, hurt, or unimportant. Sometimes it even makes us not want to play or be friends with that person."
"It’s important to remember that our actions and words have an impact on others. Every choice we make can either build someone up or accidentally bring them down. We all have the power to choose how we act."
PART 3
Practicing Respectful Choices
Teacher Says:
"Today, we're going to practice making those respectful choices! I have some Activity Cards here. Each card describes a situation where someone needs to make a choice."
"For each situation, we'll discuss three things: 1. The disrespectful choice, 2. The respectful choice, 3. The positive outcome if we made the respectful choice."
(Facilitate activity using Activity Cards and Slides 6 & 7 . Role-play scenarios.)
