2. Reward Assertiveness When the teen successfully uses the 3-step reframe, praise them immediately and show flexibility: "Because you asked respectfully, yes."
3. Enforce the Distinction Remind them: "I love being close with you, but I am your parent, not your roommate. Respectful speech is required in this house."
Model Student Reframe:"Mom, I understand the trash needs to go out, but I'm in the middle of a live match. If you let me finish this 8-minute round, I promise I will take it out immediately without you asking again."
Criteria Met: Acknowledges parent request + Offers specific actionable timeline + Zero profanity.
Model Student Reframe:"Mr. Davis, I understand talking disrupts the lesson. I was actually asking Sarah for a pencil so I could take notes. Can I borrow one from your desk so I can get back to work?"
Have the student report back in 3–5 days with one instance where they caught their raw impulse, filtered out cussing, and used an assertive reframe with Mom or a teacher. Reinforce that maturity is measured by self-control under pressure.
