1. Spot the Glitch
Notice the freeze
2. Calm the Body
Squeeze & breathe
3. Secret Signal
Ask for a coach
The "Oops Glitch"
Step 1 • Notice It
What Happens Inside
When something is tricky or we make an oops, our brain thinks:
"Danger! Hide or freeze up!"
Your heart might thump, your head might drop into your arms, or your body wants to stop working.
The Big Secret
Every superhero gets glitches! Mistakes do NOT mean you are in trouble.
A mistake is just a puzzle waiting for your brain to level up!
When you feel like hiding your head or stopping...
Press your invisible Reset Button!
Press Reset: 3-Count Squeeze
Step 2 • Calm Your Body
1
Squeeze Hands
Clench your hands tight like you are squeezing two big lemons for 3 slow seconds.
Hold... 1, 2, 3
2
Blow the Soup
Open your hands wide and blow out softly like cooling down a hot bowl of soup.
Whoooosh...
3
Ground Feet
Press your sneakers flat to the floor or sit cross-legged with hands parked safely.
Body is parked!
Coach Tip: When your body feels busy or fidgety on the carpet, squeeze your knees gently and breathe out slow!
Carpet Champion: The Blurt Shield
Body & Voice Control
Catch the Bubble
When an exciting idea pops in your head and wants to blurt out loudly:
A
Trap the words in your mouth like a gentle air bubble.
B
Raise your strong hand high into the air.
Park Your Motors
Busy legs and wiggly hands need safe parking spots:
Hands in lap or holding your carpet square.
Body inside your bubble space.
"My bubble protects me, and my bubble protects my friends!"
The Secret Signal
Step 3 • Ask Before Shutdown
Instead of Shutting Down...
You don't have to yell or put your head on the desk. You can use our silent superhero signal:
👍
Thumb on Chest
Quiet signal against your heart
Teacher sees it and knows: "My friend needs a coach right now!"
What You Can Say
Choose your favorite quick coach phrase:
"I'm stuck on this part."
Simple and clear!
"Can we do one together?"
Teamwork power!
Asking for help shows you are BRAVE, not weak!
You Have the Power!
Ready for Action

Glitch Busters: Supporting Resilience & Carpet Regulation
Guidance for supporting active learners with trauma backgrounds who experience freeze/shutdown responses during task frustration or error.
1. Why Mistakes Trigger Shutdown (The Freeze Response)
Not Defiance, But Perceived Threat
For children with trauma history, making a mistake or encountering difficult tasks can instantly signal danger, shame, or fear of abandonment. The amygdala perceives the error as an acute safety threat.
Dorsal Vagal Freeze (Shutdown)
When fight/flight fails, the nervous system engages dorsal vagal shutdown: slumping, head on desk, non-responsiveness, blank stare. Logic or verbal demands increase distress; safety must be restored first.
2. Proactive Carpet & Energy Management
Strategic Seating
Place on outer perimeter of the carpet with a defined carpet dot or wiggle cushion. This allows posture shifts without crowding peers.
Body Space
Nonverbal Blurt Shield
Provide a tactile squeeze object (stress star, sensory putty) or allow him to hold a "Talking Ticket" he hands to the teacher when ready.
Impulse Filter
Chunked Work Tasks
Present 1-2 items at a time. Fold worksheets in half or place a sliding card over upcoming questions to avoid visual overwhelm.
Cognitive Load
3. Immediate Co-Regulation Protocol (When He Freezes)
Golden Rule: Regulate, Relate, Reason
Phase 1: Low-Demand Presence
Sit side-by-side, not hovering face-to-face.
Zero spoken questions for 60 seconds.
Take visible, deep belly breaths yourself.
Phase 2: Sensory Touchpoint
Place the Reset Button card in his eye line.
Offer a cold sip of water or textured stress ball.
Whisper: "You are safe. We can pause."
Phase 3: Shared Micro-Step
"I hold the pencil, you point to the number."
Model an intentional silly mistake yourself.
Praise the return to connection immediately.

1. I Love Learning and Playing
I am in first grade! I am a smart boy with lots of energy. I love playing, laughing, and doing fun things with my friends and teachers.
🫧
2. Keeping My Body Calm on the Carpet
When we sit on the carpet, my body sometimes has extra wiggles. I can park my hands in my lap or hold my soft sensory fidget. If an idea wants to blurt out loudly, I catch the bubble in my mouth and raise my hand. This keeps my classroom safe and calm.
🧩
3. Sometimes School Work is Tricky
Sometimes reading, writing, or math feels tricky. Sometimes I write a letter backward or get an answer wrong. When an oops happens, my tummy might flutter or my heart might beat fast like a drum.
🛡️
4. When I Feel Like Freezing Up
When something is hard, my brain might say: "Stop working! Hide your head in your arms!" It feels like my power turned off. But I am not in trouble. A mistake does not mean danger. It just means my brain is getting ready to learn something new!
