Promise
A spoken commitment from the heart: stating an intention and sticking to it.
Reliability
Being someone friends and teachers can count on to follow through with actions.
Self-Control
The inner superpower to pause, look at our reminder, and choose our promise.
Materials Checklist & Advance Table Setup
Craft Supplies Needed:
• Pony Beads (9mm): Large-hole beads in 4 core colors (Yellow, Blue, Pink, Green) plus white/clear spacer beads.
• Pre-cut Cording: 8–10 inch segments of colorful chenille pipe cleaners or stretchy elastic jewelry cord.
• Masking Tape: Wrap one end of each cord or bend pipe cleaner end to prevent beads from slipping off while threading.
• Small Shallow Trays: 1 sorting tray or muffin tin per table for easy pincer grasp access.
Safety & Management Protocols:
• Choking Awareness: Review "Beads stay on trays or cords—never in mouths or ears." Active visual monitoring.
• Bead Limit: 1 primary Promise Bead + 4 spacer beads (5 beads total) keeps motor frustration low and length ideal.
• Helper Role: Position teacher/aide with scissors and tape to fasten bracelets quickly as students finish.
• Tape Tag: Attach student's name on a small painter's tape flag on their cord before they begin.
Differentiated Fine-Motor Pathways
Pathway A: Emerging Grasp
Use chenille pipe cleaners . Stiff wire stays straight, eliminating floppy cord frustration. Turn end into a loop stopper.
Pathway B: Standard Pre-K
Use 1mm elastic cord with the leading tip dipped in glue or wrapped in clear tape ("needle tip") for smooth threading.
Pathway C: Sensory Sensitive
Use wooden or soft silicone chunky beads for students who find clicking plastic pony beads overstimulating.

Color Choice & Promise Stating (3 Mins)
Circle Transition
Display Slide 5. Children state their choice aloud: "My promise is helping hands!" Hand child their designated colored Promise Bead. They hold it in a closed fist against their chest while walking quietly to craft tables.
2
Threading with Verbal Self-Regulation (8 Mins)
Table Crafting
Teach the rhythmic verbal motor cue: "Pinch the string, slide the bead, drop it down!" Have students string 2 spacer beads, their colored Promise Bead in the center, and 2 spacer beads. If beads scatter, prompt: "Oops! Deep breath. Reliable friends pick up."
3
Fastening & The "Heart-to-Wrist" Affirmation (4 Mins)
Adult Fastening
Teacher ties or twists cord around student's non-dominant wrist (2-finger slack). As you tie, make eye contact and prompt: "You made a promise. Who can we count on?" Student replies: "You can count on me!"
4
The 3-Minute End-of-Day Check-In Routine (Post-Lesson)
Departure Circle
Before dismissal, hold up bracelets together. Each child taps their bead and shares one moment they kept their promise. Celebrate with the Reliable Friend Handshake (two thumbs up connected).
Preschool Behavioral Coaching & Misconceptions
Challenge: Grandiose / Unrealistic Promises
"I promise I will never cry or spill juice!"
Teacher Coaching: "Promises are small daily steps, not perfection! Let's choose: 'When I spill, I will help wipe it up.'"
Challenge: Breaking Promise Mid-Day
Child snatches toy despite pink gentle-hands bead.
Teacher Coaching: "Touch your pink bead. What did you promise? It is okay to restart right now. Use gentle words."
