Facilitation Script & Prompts (Phases 1 & 2)
Phase 1 Prompt: "Imagine getting into a car for a 1,000-mile road trip without a map or phone signal. You might end up somewhere interesting, or you might end up in a ditch with no gas. High school is just around the corner. MyCAP is your personal road map—built by you, updated by you, and owned by you."
Addressing the 'I have no clue what I want to do' anxiety: Reassure students: "MyCAP is not locking you into a lifetime job contract today. It is about discovering what makes you tick so you don't waste time taking classes or pathways that don't serve your future."

Page 2: Implementation Details
3 Phase 3: Career Detective Activity (15 Min)
Partner Protocol
Pair students with an elbow partner. Each partner reviews the other's "Personal Clues" (handout section 1). Partner A suggests 2 career clusters that utilize Partner B's strengths. Then they switch.
Counselor Check-in: Circulate and watch for students with narrow career views (e.g., only "NBA player" or "Influencer"). Guide them: "If you love basketball, look at sports marketing, athletic training, data analytics, or stadium architecture."
4 Phase 4: Academic Flight Plan & Exit Reflection (10 Min)
Individual Action
Transition from dreams to reality: Grade 8 academic habits create the foundation for high school course selection (honors, vocational tracks, dual enrollment). Students write one concrete 8th grade academic SMART habit.
Key Emphasis: High school transcripts start on day one of 9th grade. The study habits, attendance, and advocacy skills they build right now will dictate which doors open wide in high school.
Bridging to MEFA Pathway (Upcoming Digital Access)
MEFA Pathway (Your Plan for the Future) will be the digital hub where students store and grow their MyCAP. Explain clearly:
1. Profile & Assessments Students will take the digital Interest Assessment & Work Values inventory to expand today's notes.
2. Career & College Search They can save careers to their favorites list and see Massachusetts wages and job growth rates.
3. 4-Year Course Plan Tracks high school graduation requirements and college eligibility year by year.
Differentiation Strategies
- Multilingual Learners: Provide translated vocabulary glossaries; allow sharing in native languages during partner work.
- Struggling Writers: Accept bullet points, sketches, or audio-to-text dictation with partner.
- Advanced / Highly Focused: Have students investigate required certifications or college majors for target careers.
Common Misconceptions
- "I have to pick my forever career right now." Correct: MyCAP evolves; changing your mind is encouraged!
- "Middle school grades don't matter." Correct: Middle school builds the stamina, skills, and placement levels for Grade 9.
- "College is the only path." Correct: Trades, technical schools, apprenticeships, military, and 2/4-year degrees are all valid.
Formative Check & Exit Collection
Collect the Student Handouts at the end of class. Keep them in a classroom portfolio or advisory folder. When MEFA Pathway login credentials are distributed in subsequent weeks, return these sheets so students can input their saved goals and career interests directly into the platform.
