Phase 1 • 10 Minutes Circle Rug Meeting
The Lonely Playground: Puppet Hook
Gather students on the carpet. Teacher introduces Barnaby Bear sitting head-down holding a playground ball. Pip Penguin enters bouncing excitedly. Barnaby sighs and says, "Nobody wants to play with me."
Teacher Inquiry Prompt: "Look at Barnaby's shoulders and face. How does he feel? What can Pip say to build a friendship bridge?"
Phase 2 • 12 Minutes Explicit Modeling & Choral Chants
Teaching the Three Golden Bridge Phrases
Display Slide Deck. Explain that words act like wooden planks on a bridge that connect two friends. Teach each phrase using total physical response (TPR) hand gestures:
Phrase #1 "Can I join you?"
Gesture: Two hands reaching forward with palms up.
Phrase #2 "Do you want a turn?"
Gesture: Passing an imaginary ball with a smile.
Phrase #3 "Let's play together!"
Gesture: Interlocking fingers into a sturdy bridge.

Phase 3 • 15 Minutes Partner Rehearsal
Partner Puppet Play & Scenario Stations
Pair students knee-to-knee. Hand out finger puppets or foam cutouts. Teacher holds up Scenario Cards (e.g., The Swings Queue , Sandbox Builders , Chalk Artists ). Partner A practices acting as the child waiting; Partner B practices greeting and inviting using the target phrase. Switch roles after 3 minutes.
Teacher Walkabout Check: Listen for volume, eye contact, and kind facial expressions.
Phase 4 • 8 Minutes Debrief & Recess Pledge
Circle Debrief & Bridge Builder Badge Pledge
Bring puppets back to the rug. Barnaby and Pip hold hands across the center. Each student completes the verbal sentence stem: "On the playground today, I will build a bridge by asking ________." Students tap their chest to seal the Bridge Builder pledge.

Watches peers from periphery without speaking or takes toys without asking. Requires 1:1 educator prompt to initiate verbal invitation.

Uses a Bridge Phrase when reminded by the visual cue card or peer reminder. Understands turn-taking with brief timer guidance.

Independently spots solitary peers, approaches with welcoming body language, and spontaneously offers a turn or invites them into games.
Tiered Support & Adaptations
For Multilingual / Non-Verbal Learners:
Use the "Bridge High-Five" and visual icon cards so children can invite friends with physical warmth, hand gestures, and picture prompts.
For Impulsive or Hesitant Learners:
Assign a designated "Recess Ambassador" peer partner. Provide a tactile 2-minute visual sand timer for swing and slide queues.

• Key Teaching Point: Sometimes games have real equipment limits. It does not mean they dislike you!
• Bridge Solution: Say, "Okay! May I have next turn?" or invite another waiting friend to start a new game.
Round 4: The Turn-Timer Strategy Fair Equipment Sharing
"Why does taking turns make playing together more fun for everyone?"
Encourage children to share how good it feels when someone notices them waiting and hands them the ball without an adult having to step in.
