Cheatsheet
How to handle criticism like a pro—even when you think they're wrong.
The "Inner Boss" Challenge
Hearing feedback you disagree with is one of the hardest "Final Boss" moments in any job. It’s natural to feel defensive, but how you react defines your professional reputation. Use these scripts and strategies to stay cool, calm, and collected.
Step 01
The Strategic Pause
Don't interrupt or argue immediately. Take a breath. Your goal is to listen to understand , not listen to defend.
Step 02
Ask for Clarity
Ask for specific examples. This moves the conversation from "feelings" to "facts" and gives you time to process.
Step 03
Offer Your View
Use "I" statements to share your perspective without blaming the other person or sounding hostile.
Step 04
Find the Pivot
Focus on the future. What is the goal you both want? Work toward a solution you can both agree on.
The Pro Scripts
When you need more info
"I appreciate you sharing that with me. Could you provide a specific example so I can better understand where I might have missed the mark?"
When your perspective is different
"Thank you for that feedback. From my perspective, I was focused on [Task X], which is why I chose to [Action Y]. How can I balance that with what you’re suggesting?"
When you need time to process
"I’m hearing what you’re saying. I’d like to take a little time to reflect on this so I can give you a thoughtful response. Can we touch base tomorrow?"
Level Down: Avoid These Moves
Interrupting before they finish.
Using "Yeah, but..." (It cancels your listening).
Eye-rolling or heavy sighing.
Blaming a teammate or customer.
Pro-Tip: Even if you disagree 100%, you can still say "Thank you for the feedback." It acknowledges them without agreeing with the point.

1. Warm-Up: How Do You Show Up?
5 Minutes
Teacher Says:
"Good morning/afternoon, everyone! Please take a moment to look at the screen. We're starting today with an important question: 'How can managing my emotions and communication help me succeed at work and in my future career?' I want you to silently reflect on this question for about 30 seconds. Think about what you already know about how we're expected to act and speak in professional settings, whether that's a job, an internship, or even a school group project."
Action: Allow 1-2 students to share briefly. Guide them towards general workplace expectations and transition to the next slide.
2. Introduction: Pro Comms & Emotions
10 Minutes
Teacher Says:
"So, what exactly *is* professional communication? It's about how we talk, how we listen, how we present ourselves, and even how we write emails or texts... We're talking about our **verbal communication**—the words we choose and our tone. It's also **non-verbal**—things like making eye contact and posture. And in today's world, **digital communication** is huge. It’s all about getting your message across clearly and respectfully."
"Now, let's talk about our emotions. We all feel stressed, frustrated, or even bored sometimes, right? These feelings are totally normal. But how we *respond* to these emotions, especially at work, is critical. Learning to regulate these emotions—to respond calmly and constructively instead of reacting impulsively—is a superpower."
3. Activity: Workplace Scenario Analysis
15 Minutes
Teacher Says:
"Now it's time to put your thinking caps on! I'm going to divide you into small groups. Each group will receive a set of [Workplace Scenario Cards]. In your groups, read each scenario and discuss four key things: the emotions involved, the unprofessional reaction, the professional response, and the skills needed."
Action: Circulate around the room to listen in and help if groups get stuck. Goal is to facilitate the development of professional responses.
4. Skill Practice: Crafting Responses
10 Minutes
Teacher Says:
"Fantastic discussions! Now, we're going to take this a step further. I'm distributing the [Professional Responses Worksheet]. As a class, let's pick one scenario. Individually, on your worksheet, write out your most professional response. Focus on the strategies we've discussed."
"I'm also handing out a **Classy Feedback Cheatsheet**. This is a secret weapon for those 'Final Boss' moments—like when you get feedback you completely disagree with. Use the scripts and the 4-step system on this sheet to help you craft your worksheet responses and keep them professional."
Action: Call on students to share their responses and provide constructive feedback on specific communication techniques used. Highlight how they might use the cheatsheet in real life.
5. Cool-Down: Takeaway
5 Minutes
Teacher Says:
"Excellent work today, future professionals! Keep that cheatsheet in your folder for your future jobs. To wrap up, please complete the [My Pro-Comms Takeaway] exit ticket. Reflect on one key thing you learned. Hand it in as you leave. Great job everyone!"
