A Kindergarten Lesson on Active Kindness
Duration: 30 Minutes
Grade: Kindergarten
Learning Objective
Students will complete a 3-in-a-row kindness bingo by performing simple, observable acts of kindness toward peers and teachers during center time.
Key Concepts
- Kindness: Being friendly and helpful.
- Action: Doing something, not just thinking it.
- Charity: Giving help or love freely.
- Motivation: The "why" behind our kind acts.
Materials Needed

Instructional Arc
1
Launch: The Bingo Challenge (5 min)
Introduce the game and explain that "Bingo" usually means winning, but here, everyone wins when we are kind.
2
Model: Kindness in Action (5 min)
Roleplay 3 simple acts: sharing a toy, giving a high-five, and saying "You can do it!"
3
Activity: The Secret Mission (15 min)
Students enter center time with their Bingo cards. They look for opportunities to perform the acts on their cards.
4
Reflection: Heart Check (5 min)
Gather back together. Ask: "How did your heart feel when you were kind?" vs "How did it feel to get a sticker?"
Differentiation Strategies
Scaffolding (Support)
For students who need extra help socialized.
- Pair with a "Kindness Buddy."
- Teacher prompts: "Look! Sarah is carrying many blocks. How can we be kind?"
- Focus on 1 act instead of a row of 3.
Extension (Challenge)
For students ready for deeper empathy.
- Ask them to spot "Invisible Acts" (cleaning up a mess no one saw).
- Challenge them to complete the whole card (Blackout Bingo).
- Encourage them to invent their own kind act.
Assessment Questions
Observation Check:
Can the student identify an opportunity to be kind without teacher prompting?
Verbal Check:
"Why is it important to be kind even if we don't have a bingo card?"
Teacher Tip
Kindergarteners can sometimes focus too much on the prize. If a student is "performing" kindness just for the sticker, acknowledge the act but redirect focus: "I saw you shared your crayon! Look at your friend's face—they look so happy now. That's the real magic of kindness."

Kindness Bingo Challenge
1
The Reveal (5 Minutes)
Goal: Spark Excitement & Explain the "Secret Mission"
TEACHER: "Class, come closer! I have a secret mission for all of you. Today, we are playing a game called Kindness Bingo. Does anyone know what 'kindness' means?"
(Wait for student answers - look for things like: being nice, sharing, help.)
TEACHER: "Yes! In this game, your board has pictures of kind things to do. Your mission is to find a friend or a teacher and do one of those kind things. Once you do it, you get a heart sticker on that picture!"
TEACHER: "If you get 3 hearts in a row—down, across, or diagonal—you shout 'BINGO!' and our classroom Kindness Board will get a giant heart too!"
2
The Model (5 Minutes)
Goal: Show, Don't Just Tell
TEACHER: "Let's practice! I see [Teacher Assistant/Student Volunteer] is playing with blocks. If I want to be kind, what should I do?"
(Listen for suggestions like 'help' or 'share'.)
TEACHER: "Great! I'm going to walk over and say, 'Can I help you build that?' Watch!"
**Teacher performs the act of kindness**
TEACHER: "I just did a kind act! Now I can mark my board. Ready for your mission?"
3
Heart Check (5 Minutes)
Goal: Reflection & Celebration
(After 15 minutes of center time gameplay, gather students.)
TEACHER: "Look at all these hearts! Give yourselves a huge hug for being Kindness Champions. Tell a partner: What was one kind thing you did today?"
TEACHER: "How did your heart feel when you helped your friend? Did it feel warm and fuzzy?"
TEACHER: "Even when our game ends, the Kindness Challenge never stops. Let's see if we can fill our classroom board by the end of the week!"
