Verbatim Modeling Scripts
Script 1: Reframing the "Emotional Alarm"
"Class, when you feel angry, scared, or overwhelmed, your brain is like a smoke detector sounding off. Your chest tightens, fists clench, or stomach flips. That alarm is trying to protect you, but your brain cannot do math or reading while an alarm is screaming! The Cozy Corner is not a punishment or time-out; it is our classroom's pit-stop to quiet the alarm so you can be back in the driver’s seat."
Script 2: Guiding Five-Finger Breathing
"Spread one hand out wide like a sea star. Take your other pointer finger. Place it at the base of your thumb. Breathe in through your nose as you slide up to the tip... hold at the very top... breathe out through your mouth like you're blowing out birthday candles as you slide down. Up with calm air, down with tension. Let's do all five fingers together."
Essential Classroom Norms & Boundaries
1 Student At A Time
A solitary reset zone maintains calm. If occupied, students use in-seat desk strategies.
3 to 5 Minute Timer
Use a visual sand or liquid motion timer. When the sand drops, student completes the reflection pass.
Tools, Not Toys
Fidgets, soft pillows, and weighted lap pads stay low and silent. Misused tools rest in the bin.

Grade-Level Adaptations
Grade Band Breathing & Sensory Focus Cozy Corner Modification Kindergarten – Grade 1 Use tactile props (teddy bear on belly to see it rise; smelling soup / blowing dandelions). Limit sensory prompt to 2 senses (Look & Touch). Visual emoji emotion cards instead of written text. 3-minute liquid bubbler timer. Grades 2 – 3 Five-Finger breathing with count (4s in, 4s hold, 4s out). 5-4-3-2-1 countdown targeting concrete classroom items. Laminated feelings thermometer with dry-erase checkboxes and physical sensory bin. Grades 4 – 5 Internal body scan ("Where am I holding stress? Shoulders, jaw, stomach?"). Cognitive reframing: "This is tough, but I am safe." Self-directed reflection journal slip. Desk-based discrete breathing for self-advocacy.
Common Scenarios & Counselor Responses
Work Avoidance
Student visits the corner whenever independent writing starts.
Response: "The corner helps us reset, not skip. Choose 2 breaths, then let’s do problem #1 together."
Dysregulated Meltdown
Student is actively crying or slamming materials; cannot read slips.
Response: Skip the slips. Sit near them quietly. Model slow breathing silently without making demands.
Refusal to Exit
Timer finished, but student refuses to leave the soft seating.
Response: Offer two safe transitions: "Would you like to take your sensory stone to your desk, or walk with me for a sip of water?"
Student Regulation Progression Rubric
Level 1: Reactive
Needs adult prompt to pause; unaware of physical tension signs.
Level 2: Guided
Accepts invite to corner; executes breathing with adult modeling.
Level 3: Independent
Self-initiates corner visit; selects appropriate tool and exits upon timer.
Level 4: Internalized
Employs five-finger or 5-4-3-2-1 breathing at desk without needing the corner.
