What is Self-Care?
It's NOT...
Being selfish or "doing nothing."
It IS...
Active healing. It’s giving your brain and body what they need to feel safe again.

A Note for You
"Stress is like a storm. It can be scary and loud, but storms always pass. You are the mountain underneath."
Healing isn't about being 'happy' all the time. It's about being kind to yourself while you're hurting.

Sensitivity & Safety Notes
Choice is Power:
In trauma-informed care, choice is essential. Always offer students the "right to pass" on sharing. Let them know they can sit quietly if they don't feel like filling out a section.
Emotional Safety:
If a student becomes visibly distressed, have a pre-arranged "quiet spot" or a plan to connect them with a counselor immediately. Do not force participation.
15-Minute Pacing
0-3 Min
Introduction & Weather Report
Use Slide 2 to check in. Model vulnerability by sharing your own "weather report" (e.g., "I'm feeling a little cloudy because I have a long to-do list, but I'm here with you now.")
3-8 Min
Grounding & Concepts
Explain self-care as "recharging a battery" (Slide 3). Practice the 5-4-3-2-1 technique together (Slide 4). Encourage them to really feel their feet on the floor.
"We aren't trying to make bad feelings disappear; we're just making sure they don't take over the whole room."
8-15 Min
Toolkit Creation
Hand out the worksheet. Give them 5 minutes of quiet time to fill in their "Care Menu" and "Safety Net." Walk around to offer support, but give space.
Discussion & Wrap-Up
Key Question:
"Why do you think it's helpful to have a list of 'safe people' written down before you actually need them?"
Closing Thought:
"Remind students that healing is not linear. Some days will feel like 'Sunny' days, and others will feel like 'Storms.' Both are part of the process of getting stronger."
